Poetry Month

The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander

The phrase "This is for the unspeakable" is repeated. What is the significance? What did you think of this poem? Does it make you interested in the author's other work?

What is poetry? One writer said "poetry is a shortcut from heart to heart" Author Kwame Alexander defines it here: At Home with Kwame

This month we are going to focus on observing nature as inspiration for a poem. Spend at least ten minutes observing nature. Capture the things you SEE, HEAR, SMELL, FEEL, and THINK. Jot some notes about your observations and write a poem.

Wednesday is Earth Day, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020. Earth Day is going digital this year.

Asian Heritage Month 🏮 🧧 🎎 🥻🥮

This month celebrates the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and their contributions to Canada. It also provides an opportunity for Canadians across the country to reflect on the contributions of Asian Canadians to the growth and prosperity of Canada.

Happy Star Wars Day! Celebrate by imagining yourself in a galaxy far, far away. You could try building your own spaceship out of Lego, cardboard boxes or even pillows. Challenge someone to a pretend lightsaber battle. Style your hair like Princess Leia. Or you could read about the heroes of the Resistance and their fight against evil Imperial forces.

Indigenous Heritage Month

In June, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada by reading their stories.

#IndigenousReads encourages reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples by sharing their literature and history.

This is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. I gratefully acknowledge these Indigenous nations for their guardianship of this land
