Go to portal.office.com, sign in to your Office 365 account, and follow the prompts under Security Info to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA).
With increasing cybersecurity threats, securing your Microsoft Office 365 account is more important than ever. One of the most effective ways to protect your account is by enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA). Through portal.office.com, users can easily configure MFA to add an extra layer of security beyond just a password.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires users to verify their identity using at least two methods:
Something you know (like a password)
Something you have (like a mobile device or authentication app)
This means even if someone steals your password, they still cannot access your account without the second factor.
Before you begin:
You must have a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 account.
MFA must be enabled by your organization’s admin (for work/school accounts).
You need access to a mobile phone or authentication app.
Step 1: Go to portal.office.com
Open a web browser and go to portal.office.com. Log in with your Office 365 credentials.
Step 2: Sign In to Your Microsoft Account
Enter your email address and password. If this is your first time setting up MFA, you'll be prompted automatically.
If not prompted, go to the top right corner, click on your profile icon, and select “View Account”. Then navigate to Security Info or My Sign-Ins.
Step 3: Begin MFA Setup
When prompted, click “Next” to begin setting up additional security verification.
Step 4: Choose Your MFA Method
You can select from one of the following options:
Authentication App (Recommended): Use apps like Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, or Authy.
Phone Call: Receive a voice call to verify your identity.
Text Message (SMS): Receive a verification code via text message.
Step 5: Set Up Authentication App (if selected)
Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play.
Open the app and tap Add account.
Choose Work or school account.
Use your phone to scan the QR code displayed on portal.office.com.
Once scanned, click Next on the website to test the connection.
Step 6: Verify and Complete
You will receive a test verification (a code or push notification) to confirm everything is working. Once successful, click Done to finish the setup.
