Philosophy of Christian Education
Education sets the foundation for success in a child's life and opens the door to numerous opportunities for growth and advancement throughout his or her lifetime. Christian education, however, not only sets that foundation for success, but also trains and strengthens students to live a life devoted to God, following after Him. For this reason, in addition to learning traditional subjects such as math, science, reading, and social studies, students memorize truths from the Bible, abide in God's Word, and come to understand that God freely offers them salvation by grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16-17). Upon finishing their time in Christian education, students are fully equipped with the Armor of God and are ready to fulfill the Great Commission by "go[ing] and mak[ing] disciples of all nations" (Ephesians 6:10-18; Matthew 28:19-20).
About Ms. Mai
In 2003, Ms. Mai's family moved from Hendersonville, Tennessee, to Beaverton, Oregon, where her parents enrolled her siblings and her in the city's local Lutheran elementary school: Pilgrim Lutheran. She attended Pilgrim for 5th-8th grade and then attended Jesuit High School - Portland, graduating in 2011 as one of the school's valedictorians.
From there, she attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. After finishing two years as an electrical engineering major and completing a design engineering internship at Garmin AT, Ms. Mai realized that she did not want to be an engineer for the rest of her life, and instead followed God's call to develop her written and verbal communication skills. With that came a change of majors, and two years later she graduated from Gonzaga summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and a minor in Mathematics.
God still had other plans for Ms. Mai, though; He was calling her to become a teacher. To fulfill that call, Ms. Mai earned her Master of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in Elementary Education from Concordia University - Portland in April 2016. During that time, she also completed her Professional Church Worker certification.
As Ms. Mai was finishing her teaching degree, God provided an amazing opportunity for her: a call to be the 5th grade teacher at Pilgrim Lutheran Christian School, the same school she had attended for 5th-8th grade! Ms. Mai accepted the call to Pilgrim and is now blessed to serve alongside many of the same teachers who once taught her as she serves with church and home in wholly developing her students - body, mind, and spirit - through Christian education.
"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" -Jeremiah 29:11
