Hello! My name is Zachary Wilson and I am the fourth grade teacher at St. Monica Catholic School. I have been teaching for 11 years all in Catholic Schools. I am a graduate of Western Michigan University. I majored in elementary education with minors in math, science, and integrative creative arts. I live here in Kalamazoo with my wife and four children, three of which attend here at St. Monica. I’m very excited to be a part of your child’s education and to work with the wonderful team of teachers and administrators here at St. Monica.

In fourth grade we focus all our studies around Theology. Fourth grade will learn about the history of the Church, the Sacraments and Ten Commandments. Students will learn the following prayers: Fatima prayer, Hail Holy Queen, Morning Offering, Prayer to Know One's Vocation. We will also be learning about the lives of Saints daily and much, much more!

Reading / English Language Arts: In fourth grade we will be working on print and cursive handwriting. Students will learn and practice structure, mechanics and have many writing opportunities throughout the year. Students will be writing research reports, formal letters, how to and personal narratives. Some of the books your child will be reading in literature circles will be, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Stuart Little, The Hobbit, and the The Jungle Book.

Math: Students will learn standard algorithms for addition and subtraction. We will learn and use multiple strategies for multiplication and utilize the partial quotients method for division. Fourth grade will be adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We will also be using formulas to solve area and measurement of angles and shapes.

History: Fourth grade will be studying the Early Modern Era, The Renaissance, the Reformation, and the New World. In addition to this we will be learning about regions of the United States. Looking at different features from different states and cities.

Science: Students will learn about plant/animal life, Potential and Kinetic Energy, and Waves. In addition to this we will also do several STREAM activities throughout the year. Our big challenge is designing and building catapults for the STREAM Challenge.

My classroom is academically stimulating for all children, but it is also a warm and nurturing environment as well. We will continually strive to be cooperative classmates so that everyone is comfortable in our classroom and able to learn and grow to their full potential.
