I am focused on pushing students to be great mathematicians and thinkers. Throughout our time together, we will be emphasizing the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practices (SMP’s) in our learning and interactive multiplayer games. These are strategies that mathematicians and thinkers practice everyday. These standards do not only apply to math, but in many other subject areas, sports, games, careers, and personal hobbies. Here they are:
Persevering with Problems: Making sense of a problem and using a plan to solve it.
Reasoning Abstractly and Quantitatively: Using numbers and variables to represent values in equations, and manipulating those quantities.
Constructing Arguments: Justifying, explaining or proving your answers while critiquing other’s answers.
Modeling with Mathematics: Using graphs, organizers, tables and diagrams to arrange and understand ideas.
Using Mathematical Tools: Choosing the appropriate tools and strategies for specific situations.
Attending to Precision: Using appropriate labels, symbols, and definitions to describe relationships.
Making Use of Structures: Using graphs and tables to describe relationships.
Using Repeated Reasoning: Finding patterns or repeated processes to help determine shortcuts.
