Mr. Thayne's Math

Final Grades

Parents and Students,

I have been recieving a lot of emails about final grades. It seems that there is a lot of uncertainty regarding grades. I want to address as many of those concerns as I can.

1) The portal does not allow me to change the grading scale from a letter based grading system to a pass/fail grading system. If your student has a letter grade on portal they will pass the class with a "P" grade. If your student has an F, it does not mean that they will fail the class (more on that in item 2).

2) Failing grades- Because of the unique situation we are all going through right now, the standard to pass the class has been lowered significantly. Before I assign a failing grade- I will first look at the portal. If the portal grade is above 25% they will pass the class. For those with a grade below 25% I will average the students grade for second and third terms and assign a pass/fail based on the averaged grade. To fail the class you will have had to get below 25% this term and done poorly in both second and third terms. My advice to failing students is to go to Aleks and do as many open assignments as you can.

3) Updating the Portal- Many of the students grades on portal are not updated. Aleks does not notify me when a student submits a late assignment. As a result of this I am choosing to wait until all of the student work has been submitted and the assignment has been closed before I update the portal. I will do so on Monday. I will be updating grades for Google classroom questions at the same time.

Please know that I understand that this has been both difficult and frustrating for everyone. I am going to be extremely understanding of any and all circumstances that students find themselves in. If you have any questions please email me directly.

The Final Week

Google Classroom Code:

Honors Google Classroom code- 3ecmsfo

7th Math Google Classroom code- t32tz2f

The Plan moving forward:

  1. I opened up assignments on Aleks, if you have any missing work on ALEKS do that this week.
  2. No Google Meet this week
  3. Last Day of the quarter is 18 May, last day to complete work is 17 May by midnight.

A few words about grades

1- You will be graded on a pass/fail this term.

2- The portal is not accurate because it is based on a letter grade, do not stress about your portal grade.

3- If you complete all the open assignments on ALEKS you will pass the class.

Updated 3/23 @ 11:54am

Assignment 1: Create a graph of the cases of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Utah. From Sunday March 15 to whenever school gets back into session (you'll be adding to it everyday).

Step 1: Using a newspaper or news site archive (KSL-https://www.ksl.com/?nid=213&arc=1070, KUTV- https://kutv.com/archive, Deseretnews- https://www.deseret.com/archives/2020/3, or Salt Lake Tribune- https://www.sltrib.com/search/coronavirus/?q=coronavirus) gather data about how many cases there have been each day. (Hint: I like the way that the KSL website is setup best, but use whichever one you find works best for you).

Step 2: Graph the data using Google Sheets watch the following Youtube video for help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbWNatcnT8w . The X values should be the date and the y values should be the number of confirmed coronavirus cases. Be sure to label both the Axis, change the legend, and add a title.

Step 3: using the data calculate the percent of change for each day. You can use either pencil and paper, or google sheets to calculate the percent of change.

Step 4: Evaluate, why are the numbers increasing so quickly (rate of spread, etc.) and is the data biased because of lack of tests. Finally, why is staying home a good idea?

Step 5: Submit the assignment to Google Classroom (No sooner than Friday 3/27- you have to include all of the days)

Message to students and parents,

While the students are away please have them work on the following review (Click the link for the worksheet: https://drive.google.com/a/wsdstudent.net/file/d/1tz45fnry9Z1bqjZdDlBnSkge172pQaAj/view?usp=sharing). Additionally, they will need to be working on Aleks.com they should already have their username/passwords in their student notebooks, or for many of them it is saved using their google account. If you can't find it feel free to email me. I will be adding assignments periodically to Aleks. For now students should be doing 1-3 topics per day in Aleks.

Stay safe, practice social distancing, and wash those hands.

See you when we start back up

Mr. Thayne

Update:

I have assigned everyone 10 Aleks topics to begin with. Because we are missing school and class instruction I am going to include topics that we are not going to be able to cover once school resumes. I will begin with a Geometry Unit. The first assignment will be posted soon.

Students, before you email me and ask for your password log into Google, then go to Aleks.com. Many of you have you password saved in google passwords and will be able to get into the program.

Update 3/19:

Complete Aleks assignment: Constructing Triangles.

I know that this is a little tricky. But I am confident that you will be able to figure it out.
