Option 3: Complete the Byzantine Worksheet & Summary (Unit 2 Lesson 1) No Extra Credit is included in this Option
Unit 2 Lesson 4:
You need to create your own nontraditional artwork. You might choose installation art, environmental art, or use an unconventional medium. You can do a sculpture out of cardboard or recycled materials, do environmental art like Andy Goldsworthy you read about in the unit, or anything besides drawing, painting and digital drawing or painting.

What issues are currently affecting your local community, culture, nation, or world? Research recent news items by reading the paper, listening to the radio, or accessing another source. Choose an issue that grabs your attention and motivates you to share your thoughts. Create a work of art that expresses your opinion about the issue and/or inspires others to action. Your piece might be a political cartoon, activist art, or simply an expression of strong values.

In the year 285 AD, the Roman Empire was vast and almost unmanageable. To gain better control, its powerful leaders split its governance into an Eastern and a Western Empire. The eastern half, existing near the continental borders of Europe and Asia, grew to become the wealthy, influential Byzantine Empire. Think about how you would craft a narrative of this empire from some of its external memory artifacts. What story do the objects tell?
