Southern Alamance Middle School
I am passionate about transforming education.

Welcome to Mrs. Smith's Class!

I am thrilled to be a part of the tiger family at Southern Middle School this year! This year will be full of learning and fun. My teaching philosophy is school should prepare students for real-life by looking like real-life. This means projects, choices, workshops, rubrics, goals, and deadlines. My passion is showing students learning is a life-long process, not just something you do to get a good grade. I've spent the last 7 years in Texas but I am originally a North Carolinian; I was born and raised in North Carolina. I attended Wingate University in Wingate, NC where I received a degree in Psychology with a minor in Human Services. After attending Wingate University, my husband and I moved to Texas where I continued my education and earned a teaching license. I am currently coming to Southern Middle School with 6 years experience teaching 3rd grade Math, Science, ELA, Social Studies, as well as 4th & 5th grade ELA, Social Studies. I look forward to learning with your student this school year!

Reading

"Real reading" involves knowing how to choose a just right book and when to abandon a book. "Real reading" involves reading for enjoyment, reading for learning, reflecting, generating questions, making inferences, as well as connecting reading to one's own life. Reading should be enjoyed daily.

Writing

Writing is more than organization, grammar and writing conventions. A good writer has those traits plus more. A good writer writes with their voice, superb word choice, sentence fluency, and generates central ideas to entertain, persuade, or inform their reader. A good writer SHOWS not tells their message to the reader.

Social Studies

Without social studies, how can we process our world around us? Our society, other cultures, and past events change how we look at our world, and effect the decisions we make, as well as the opinions we form. Our history put us where we are today. To move forward we must understand our past and present world.

Fun facts about me:

I have an almost three year old son I enjoy playing and cuddling with at home. He spends most of his day playing with cars, running around, and pretending to be a dinosaur, Spider-Man, or Catboy from PJ Masks. I am a big fan of coffee and hot tea. My favorite color is purple. I enjoy traveling and have been fortunate enough to visit Spain & Morocco while in college.
