An Amazing Group of Learners

About Mrs. Heyer

Jen grew up wanting to be a stunt womanIn sixth grade, she decided she would be a stunt woman along with a teacher after having a very influential physical education teacher in her life.  After graduating high school, she spent her first year of college at Bemidji state university with a focus on physical education.  after that first year, the focus moved to elementary education and she moved to augsburg college.  Jen graduated with her Bachelor's degree in elementary education and returned to augsburg for her master's degree in reading.  as a lifelong learner - she returned to college at st. Mary's university for a second master's degree in educational leadership with a license for school administration.

jen taught in the eden prairie school district for 19 years (3rd grade, 2nd grade and 17 years in kindergarten.)  In 2015, she created a program called "Wilderness Wednesday."  Her students are taught outside for the majority of the day on Wednesdays; spending all morning and afternoon in the school forest area learning state standards through environmental education.  Jen moved to highlands elementary, Edina, in 2020.

In 2018, jen had the privilege of attending the american wilderness leadership school in jackson hole, WY for 8 days.  in 2019, she received the Presidential Innovation award for environmental educators in washington, dc from the environmental protection agency.  she was also selected as the 2019 MN environmental educator of the year by the minnesota association for environmental education.  in addition, the conservation commission chose jen to receive the 2019 sustainable eden prairie award for her work in water conservation and environmental education.
