Course Description

Students will learn social studies using the fifth-grade Georgia Standards of Excellence to guide the scope and sequence of the curriculum. In fifth grade, students are in the final year of a three year study of United States history in which all four strands (history, geography, civics/government, and economics) are integrated.

Students begin the year learning about the growth of 19th century industry and innovation in the United States, and culminate the study with the events and impact of September 11, 2001. The geography strand emphasizes the influence of geography on U.S. history during these same time periods. In the civics/government strand, students learn about the rights of citizens contained within the Constitution, and how changes have been made over time to the Constitution to protect the rights of citizens. In the economic strand, students explore the ways consumers and producers have interacted in the American economy.

Classroom Rules

All students are expected to be:

Respectful: Be kind to others with your words and actions.

Responsible: Come to class everyday with your math book, pencils, agenda, and extra paper. Handle borrowed materials with care.

Ready to Learn: Be attentive and focused. Your behavior should not negatively affect you or those around you.

Homework

Homework is usually assigned on an “as needed” basis. Students are required to write homework assignments in their agenda.

All homework assignments are explained thoroughly. Be assured that concepts that haven’t been taught will not be given as homework.

Grading

Grades at the end of each quarter are based on test scores, quizzes, and classwork. Quizzes and classwork are recorded once in the gradebook and test scores are recorded twice.

Grading scale: 100-90 = A; 89-80 = B; 79-73 = C; 72-70 = D; 69-0 = F

Communication

Email is the most effective mode of communication. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns or questions.

Our 5th grade team will have a weekly newsletter that will give you information about standards being taught in each subject area along with important calendar events. It will be sent through email from your homeroom teacher and will also be posted on my web page in the “Newsletters” tab.

All teachers will have a Google Classroom page set up for each subject area, which students will use throughout the year for communication and assignment completion. Students can access Google Classroom through their ClassLink account.
