This exhibit celebrates Black art while informing and educating the attendees on the history and traditions of art and culture. Many times, the Black experience is seen as a monolith, but this exhibition exemplifies the beauty and differences in Blackness through artistic expression. Below, you will find a virtual exhibition that features the artwork of students from Wichita Public Schools, Derby Public Schools, and Topeka Public Schools.

2020 District Holiday cards

Each year the district asks for submissions for holiday card art. Once the contest is finalized, the cards are displayed on the district website and Facebook page. A physical card is mailed to the family of the winning student.

I provided several images for the entry, but I just had a hunch one of the stockings would be a winner! It was a joy watching the students make these then seeing them on display. It's one of my favorite ideas I came up with on a whelm.

Congratulations to Aaliyah Lattimore for being chosen in this year's contest as well as representing our school and the art program!

CLAY KITS

This year I invited Ms. Monette Mark who owns  Fire Me Up Ceramics in the NOTO art district to collaborate with the Signature Arts program to insure our students receive an opportunity this year to work with clay. They students have been asking about the media since I started working at Quincy last August of 2019.

We had plans to collaborate in-class last spring, but due to COVID, the collaboration was put a halt. We were told not to use clay in the classroom, so this year, kits were produced by Ms. Mark for students to work independently or as family fun at home with video tutorials she produced to guide students as they explore the media.

Celebrating the nov. 3rd election in art room 101

Between October 12 and October 23, the Roadrunners will be celebrating the November 3rd Election Day by practicing voting on their ballots!  They will be voting for a president as well as a class treat. We are being introduced to vocabulary words such as ballot, vote, election, and president. Each class will be creating artwork with the U.S. flag as the emphasis.

Students will practice some of the elements of art: line and pattern. We learned the meaning of symbolism and how we use images to communicate in art as well as in the outside world.  Kindergarten will apply these art ingredients by making an abstract color-mixing flag; the first grade will use pom-poms and clothespins with a dabbing technique; the third grade will make mono-prints of flags; the fourth and fifth grade will learn fun facts about bald eagles before drawing and painting their own versions of these majestic animals with a contrasting background of the American flag. They will also be introduced to pop artist Jasper Johns and African-American contemporary artist David Hammons.

In the art room, we will continue to visit different parts of the United States and learn about U.S. geography and more through art!

NOTO First FRIDAY Art TENT

On October 2, 2020, the Quincy art program participated in First Friday at the NOTO district, offering free canvases to Quincy students as well as community members to paint on with cotton swabs. Adults and children alike painted together at tables set up on the lawn of Rosebud Park. Student artwork sold to interested folks walking the strip. It was a wonderful time in the fresh evening air, getting creative and being serenaded by the band playing on the park stage. I enjoyed meeting parents and seeing smiles on the faces of happy students!
