My name is Jen Whiting and I am one of the 2nd Grade teachers at St. Monica Catholic School. I am currently in my 4th year as a teacher at St. Monica. I am Blessed to help my students reach the M.O.R.E. Factor every day, through truth, beauty, and goodness. I received my Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University, with minors in Math, Science, Early Childhood, & Integrated Creative Arts. I'm currently earning my Master's degree from the University of Dayton, with a concentration in Educational Leadership in a Catholic School. I live in Portage with my husband, who attended St. Monica School and Hackett Catholic Central, & our 3 children, who attend St. Monica School.

In 2nd Grade, one big focus is around Theology, Classic Literature, and Roman History. In Theology, students will learn the parables that Jesus tells in the Bible and look at relationships between literature characters and biblical people to help develop our morality. We will also look at saints that are related to our areas of study: St. John Nepomucene, St. Faustina, St. Edward the Confessor, St. Therese, St. Bridget of Sweden, St. John Vianney, St. Padre Pio, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Juan Diego, and St. Pius. For Reading and English Language Arts (ELA), we will work on handwriting, exposure to cursive letters, and reading books like St. George and the Dragon, The Wicked Prince, and The Clown of God. We will also be learning Latin as a new language, but also as a way to teach ELA: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, direct objects, indirect objects, etc. In History, we will focus on Roman history. We will look at the beginnings of Rome, the Roman Empire, the life of Jesus, the fall of Rome, and finally the rise of the Church.

In 2nd Grade, another big focus is on two Sacraments. We help prepare our students for the Sacrament of Penance & the Sacrament of First Eucharist.

In Mathematics, the students will learn operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, & geometry.

In Science, the students will learn learn about plant and animal survival, materials and their uses, & the Earth's surface.
