Off Screen Activity Ideas

Ideas for Things to Do NOT in Front of a Screen:

Reading / Writing:

  • Read a book to yourself, a parent, sibling, pet, or stuffed animal. It would be fun to read to someone who can’t be with you through Face time!
  • Follow directions on a recipe to help make something for your family.
  • Write to a grandparent or anyone else who would love to hear from you.
  • Read and write some poems (since our poetry unit was interrupted). You can go to this wonderful site to find examples of fun poems to read and lessons on how to write them here: https://www.poetry4kids.com/# Maybe you can write enough to make your own poetry book! Can you remember some you wrote in class?
  • Keep a journal each day of what you’ve done during this time at home. If you save this, someday it can help you remember your life as a third grader during the “Big Coronavirus Outbreak!” What a story you will have to tell your kids or grandkids one day!

Math:

  • Use your skills with fractions and practice measurement, which we haven’t gotten to yet, when helping out with some cooking. You can also measure things around the house to the nearest centimeter and ½ inch.
  • This site has some fun math card games to try: https://www.weareteachers.com/math-card-games/ (You don't need a screen once you read the directions)
  • Try these cool “Magic Tricks” :

Select a number between 1 and 9, then do the following:

  • Multiply the number by 3.
  • Add 2.
  • Multiply the new number by 3.
  • Add the original number to it.
  • If your calculations are correct, the current number should end in a 6. Cross off the 6 and what remains is your original number!

Follow these steps and your answer will either be 1089 or 198:

  • Write a 3 digit number (3 different digits).
  • Below it, write the number in reverse order.
  • Subtract the smaller number from the larger number (You may need to rewrite to subtract).
  • Below that rewrite the new number in reverse order.
  • Add those two numbers.
  • If all the calculations are correct your answer is either 1089 or 198 !
