This unit was developed by Šimon Omasta and edited by Mr. Kubeš for clarity. Some of the exercises and text were expanded by Mr. Kubeš. Other contributors are acknowledged directly in the text.
In today’s age, AI has become very important for automating tasks and helping people with whatever they need. This unit will go deeper into how AI generates imagery, and how we can detect AI generated material to stray away from misinformation and bad actors.
Please watch the videos below to learn more about the topic of AI. After watching the videos, answer the following questions by email - don't forget to include the assignment number 9.1.1 in the email subject line:
What type of AI do you use? What do you use it for?
Has there ever been a time when AI saved you a lot of time or effort? What was it?
Has AI ever misunderstood the task you gave it or gave an output that you weren’t expecting? Describe the situation.
How do you feel about content such as articles or videos being completely generated by AI?
Pick a math problem from your current Secondary Mathematics course (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, ...) that you are stuck on. Plug the math problem into Math AI, MathGPT, and Microsoft Copilot and ask the given AIs to give you a step-by-step explanation for solving the given problem. E.g.:
"[Math Question you chose.]
Provide a step-by-step explanation for the question above."
Reflect on the following question in writing (email me your reflection and don't forget about the subject line "AI 9.1.2"):
Which AI tool turned out to be the most reliable and had the clearest explanation? Why? Provide screenshots as necessary.
Activity 9.1.2 was developed by Sofia D. Example prompt provided by Daeun. In this assignment, you will learn how to tell the difference between an AI generated image and a real image. You will also start off by generating your own image with the prompts generated below and answering the questions ahead. Each question should include at least 3-4 sentences as the answer.
Your work will be submitted by email using proper netiquette.
Start off by watching the videos below which will give you a better understanding of the topic:
Now, you're going to use AI Image generator. Choose the HD model and Quality Preference.
You will now try to generate images using the following prompts:
Prompt 9.2.1: Create a realistic image of a Computer Lab at school with many details, such as information written on the whiteboard and students learning while the teacher is explaining the topic.
Prompt 9.2.2: Create a realistic image of a School Yearbook with many details, and multiple people mentioned as well as their names.
Prompt 9.2.3: Create a realistic image of a school assembly with a lot of people. There should be sunlight going into the building.
Do not generate an excessive amount of images.
Now, study the generated images carefully. You may need to zoom in on different sections of the images. In your written reflection, answer the following questions:
Did you notice any mistakes in the AI image generation? If so, what did you notice?
Why do you think AI makes these types of mistakes when generating an image or video?
Do you think it is ethical of AI to be trained and learn how to make images based on existing art that people have made? Why or why not?
Email your answers to me along with the three generated images. Don't forget to include the subject line - "AI 9.2".
Please watch these videos first:
For your next task, you will have to replace a part of a real image using AI. Please only upload stock imagery and not your own personal photos or anyone else’s. You will use the Image Replace function of DeepAI for this activity.
Pick stock imagery. Here are the search keywords for the image search to use along with the directions for ImageReplace along with MS Copilot as to how to modify the images:
Prompt 9.3.1: “stock image of a man wearing a suit", “Please make the color of his suit red.”
Prompt 9.3.2: "stock image of a beach with a sandcastle", "Please remove the sandcastle from the picture."
Prompt 9.3.3: “Bratislava Main Square filled with people”, "Please remove the people from the picture and make the image clear."
Now, reflect in writing on the following questions and email your responses to me:
What is the difference between AI Image Replacing and Generating?
What were the differences between the Co-Pilot results and the DeepAI results?
Were the results what you expected or was there something wrong with the AI replacement functionality?
What are the dangers and ethical risks of AI replacement?
What are the risks of uploading a photo of yourself or your family into an AI image generator?
How can you stay safe from AI replaced imagery that spreads misinformation or deceives you?
Please, make sure to paste in the image pairs in the email along with the reflection for all three prompts.
You will write an email to me with the answers to the questions as well as your score on the quiz. Don't forget to include the assignment # 9.4 in the subject line.
For your last task, attempt to answer the following questions:
9.4.1: How can we tell the difference between a real image and an AI generated image?
9.4.2: Why do you think it is it important (or not important) to know the difference between a real image and an AI generated image?
Now take this quiz. You might learn some new things along the way which will help you in answering the following questions. Please provide the result of your quiz by the means of a screenshot.
Now, complete the following activity:
Study the image below which was prepared by Mr. Kubeš for his 13yo Cultural Studies class.
9.4.3: Can you find out which of these stamps are fake (disregarding the English Translations instead of Slovak)?
9.4.4: Can you find any other clues relating to AI image generation?
Please, explain yourself in terms of how you found out which one is fake and/or what the clues of AI generation are.
Hint: You may need to resort to lateral search. The pofis.sk website may be of particular help. Now watch the videos below to learn more about AI image detection:
For your final task, please write a reflection in the OCW format (Observations, Connections, Wonderings). The reflection should mention:
Observations: (What you have learned by watching the videos and doing the activities above)
Connections: (What it reminds you of, any connections to your or others' use of AI)
Wonderings: (What you might be wondering about, how AI will change in the future, …)
Please write the reflection directly in the email body, and don’t forget about netiquette.
