An 'EPI' cross-curricula unit of work designed with the history and French language departments


A professional English programme for middle school students

Students are first of all invited to think about the future, horizon 2030.

  • Which jobs and careers will grow?
  • Which will fade and die?

(Using Minority Report, this is also an oppotunity to revisit our work on talking about film).

In order to enable students to speak about their professionel selves, we then work on their internship report in English.

Once the internship reports are completed, work begins on thinking about our professional selves in 2030.

  • Where will I hope to be?
  • Doing what?
  • How will I get there?

An interview for their ideal position is then prepared and managed by the students.

Les étudiants sont d'abord invités à réfléchir sur l'avenir du monde du travail, horizon 2030.

  • Quels emplois et carrières vont se développer?
  • Lesquels vont disparaître et mourir?

(L'utilisation de Minority Report est l'occasion de revenir sur notre travail sur l'analyse des film et du cinéma ).

Afin de permettre aux étudiants de parler de leur identité professionnelle, nous travaillons ensuite sur leur rapport de stage en anglais en ce qui concerne leur stage de l'année de troisième :

Une fois les rapports de stage terminés, nous commençons à réfléchir à leur identités professionnelles en 2030.

  • Quel métier? Quel secteur? Quel rôle?
  • Quels études et parcours pour y arriver ?

Un entretien pour leur position idéale est ensuite préparée et gérée par les étudiants.

Professions & Qualities Bingo (P&Q Bingo)


Let's take a look at some trades and professions

Every student in the room gets a copy of this sheet.

Print this worksheet for each pupil

Students should sit in groups of four for "P&Q Bingo"


Students sit in groups of four. Each group is a team.

They work together but each individual student has a sheet to record their ideas & vocabulary.


And now let's look at the qualities required by each profession

Gameplay

The teacher projects this "randomiser wheel" which will deliver, one after the other, a series of qualities and competencies to be associated with the professions on the sheet.

The teacher projects the wheel and announces a random quality or competence.

Students in their teams try and match the quality to one of the professions on their grid and they write it in the profession's square.

(1 quality can associated with a maximum of 2 professions and therefore written in a maximum of 2 squares)

Students' sheets start to look like this :


When students have two qualities for one of the professions they encircle the profession.


When students have two qualities for one of the professions they encircle the profession.

When a team has encircled 3 professions in a vertical line or 4 professions in a horizontal line they shout 'Bingo' and teacher marks the points on the board.

1 horizontal line : 4 points (for four squares) 1 vertical line : 3 points (for three squares)

They whole class keeps playing until a team fills there grid entirely. If time allows, the teacher can continue play to find out the first, second and third teams to complete their grid.


Professions and qualities complex phrases

This sheet, projected on the whiteboard will help students consolidate the vocabulary abour professions, qualities and skills with complex, justified phrases.

* These phrases are all gender neutral : no 'he' or 'she' is used in order to confirm gender stereotypes

and 'they' replaces the singular subject pronoun as is required of modern, gender neutral discourse in anglo-saxon countries.
