Mr. Chard's Fifth Grade Site
March 23, 2020
Hello everyone! Welcome to our online classroom site! This is where you will find assignments to work on when we aren't able to be in school. I will be posting every day and checking student work as we go. This is brand new for all of us, and we will be learning together as we try school a new way! I will be checking my e-mail every hour throughout the day. You can contact me at email@example.com if you are stuck or have questions.
Did you know that you can use your Google Classroom account from home? Just use your sign in number and add @portlandschools.org. (example: firstname.lastname@example.org)
Need lunch? Meal pick up will happen daily 10:00-12:00 at East End School. Free meals are available to everyone 18 and under who is in the car or in the walking group. Meals will be distributed outside; the building is closed to the public.
Mr. Brown, Ms. Crossman, and I will be working together to plan your work for when you are at home. All East End fifth graders will have similar assignments.
I will post again tomorrow!
An Important Announcement for parents
I am reaching out to let you know the plan for learning as it exists so far. Please note, these plans are being built as we go, so may change in the coming days. I will be reaching out regularly to keep you updated.
Meals are available every weekday starting today at the school, 10:00-12:00. Lunches are free to anyone under 18 years of age who is in the car at pick-up time, or who walks to the school to pick them up. Learning packets will be available tomorrow with work for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. These packets can be picked up with lunch. Fifth grade packets will also be available to download and print at https://sites.google.com/view/mrchard/home . You can also get updates on school news at that website or at https://eastend.portlandschools.org/.
Starting next Monday, March 23, we will be transitioning to online learning. I am working on building a new class website which can be found at: https://sites.google.com/view/mrchard/home?authuser=0. This is a learning process for me; I have never taught online before. Go ahead and check my website out. There is already stuff to do there. I will update the website with new assignments every night for the next day Starting Sunday, March 22. Please remember, I learned about this yesterday and have just started working on it.
During this closure, I will be working from home, 8:00-3:00.. That means I will be checking my email at least once per hour from 8:00 AM-3:00 PM. You can also reach me on the Talking Points app. If students need help (or if they just want to say "Hello"), they should reach out to me via email (email@example.com) or Talking Points.
Here are some things you can do to help me. If you have a new cell phone number, please email it to me. (If you have never gotten a text from me, I probably have the wrong number). Text is the quickest and easiest way to reach me. In addition, we want to make sure you have a computer or tablet at home that your child can use to do school work. Portland Schools will try to make sure every family has one device to use (though there may not be enough devices, depending on need). If you have an older child who has a middle or high school device, that will be the shared device for all of your children's online learning. Let me know if you need technology. Also, please let us know if you do not have internet access. Please email with this important information.
These are difficult times; I have never experienced anything like it in my lifetime. My goal is to make sure your child's education is as uninterrupted as possible. Take care of yourselves and do not hesitate to reach out.
