Flipgrid is a wonderful, fun way to connect students to global "GridPals," or virtual penpals. It's video-based, so provides a great way for students to share about their lives at home, and learn about other lives around the world. Students have fun with this app, and it's a really quick service to learn to use.
Padlet is another asynchronous site that students can use to communicate with students around the world. This is a little more challenging than Flipgrid, as teachers need to make classroom connections themselves, but having a message board where students can virtually interact and share information is really valuable.
This site is FULL of data that teachers and students can use to compare life around the world throughout history. The goal is to help answer the following:
"Imagine the world as a street. All houses are lined up by income, the poor living to the left and the rich to the right. Everybody else somewhere in between. Where would you live? Would your life look different than your neighbours’ from other parts of the world, who share the same income level? "
Use these maps to show students how life is affected by global issues like disease, war, poverty, and other concerns. Great to use in conjunction with Gapminder. From their description:
Worldmapper is a collection of world maps called cartograms, where territories are resized on each map according to the subject of interest.
