Objective: Concept
· Students will create a sculpture using basic techniques.
· Student will be introduced to a famous artist in the field of ceramics.
· Students will define ceramics related terms.
· Students will create a Relief Sculpture using clay.
· Students will paint their work using crayons and staining it with black acrylic paint.
Specific Objectives:
· Create a relief sculpture with a theme.
· Demonstrate basic ceramics skills by using air dry or low fire cay.
· Define terms: CERAMICS, SCORE, SLIP and WAX RELIEF.
· Students will create a final sculpture that will be colored in with crayons creating a wax relief to be stained with black acrylic paint.
Introduction/ Discussion: Anticipatory Set:
This project is meant to instruct students on basic clay construction. Students will be creating a relief sculpture out of clay. Relief sculptures are centuries old and have been used in all metal coins throughout the entire history of mankind. This project will include the use of a wax relief which is a technique used to color works of art by protecting certain areas from stains or paints.
1. Define terms:
· CERAMICS - Art made from clay to produce pottery or sculptures.
· KNEADING - is a step in preparing clay for shaping.
· SLIP - Small amount of clay mixed with water and used as a ‘glue’ to join pieces together
· SCORE - Scratching the surface of clay so that 2 pieces can be joined together.
· RELIEF- Is a type of sculpture in which forms and figures are projected from the front only.
· WAX RESIST- Is a method of preventing materials from being stained by paint or dyes.
2. Students will be shown how to attach clay (like an arm to a body) using slip and score as well as how to work with clay.
To prevent the clay from drying out students need to bring in a plastic bag or zip lock back to keep the sculpture from drying out. Place the sculpture into the bag and seal so as to keep air from the clay. This should keep the sculpture from drying until the project is finished.
3. Students will create two concept drawings of a design that they would like to turn into a relief sculpture. Each work should have a theme that can be turned into easy to understand symbols or objects. This design needs to have a pattern or images that are cut into the clay as well as images that come out of the clay. The concept drawings need to be full page using colors as crayons will be used as a wax resist against a stain.
4. The Best concept drawing will chosen as the model for the relief sculpture. Students will take clay and roll it out into ½ inch to 1 inch thick slabs of clay (pinky thick). Using a paper plate as a base and guide the clay should be spread out as to cover the center circle of the plate ( 6 inches in diameter). Additional clay will be used to create the images or objects that will come out of the clay creating the relief. Students will need to slip and score the clay as well as blend the clay into the base. After the relief has been made patterns or images need to be carved into the clay but not through the clay.
5. Once the art has been completed it will need to air dry for several day and then fired in a kiln.
6. To color in the art crayons will be used to create both the color of the image and act as a wax resist to prevent the staining. Students will color in most of the clay with crayons both flat surfaces and raised surfaces. Images that have been carved into the clay will be stained with the acrylic paint and any other surfaces that the crayons did not cover. Once the project is colored with crayons use a mixture of one part black acrylic paint to two parts water to make a stain. Brush on the black stain onto the sculpture and give a few moments to dry. Using a magic erase sponge and water wipe off the stain from the sculpture. Many low areas and the sections carved into the clay will retain the stain creating a intensifying color appearance.
7. Once the project is completed it will air dry for the rest of the day
8. Summary / Closure:
After completing the project students should have mastered a basic understanding clay.
The students will have a completed a series of drawings as well as developed a basic understandings of the historical importance of a famous sculptor.
A final piece of art will be completed using basic relief and wax resist techniques. Using ceramics students will have gained an understanding of slip, score, relief and other techniques.
Evaluation: Assessment Based on Objectives:
The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the art piece, participation, effort, and quality of paper and art work.
· Students will earn a percentage for their Portfolio Review, both as presenter and as audience.
· Quality of the work done will be a large part of the grade based on how well they have demonstrated an understanding of the concepts and their depiction. Overall condition of the final pieces will also have a factor in the grading.
· Effort put into the project will be demonstrated by both the final images and the how well the student worked in class on each project. (Factors include: is the project completed, and does it look like the student worked on it and not other things?)
· The final ceramic piece both construction and painting will be combined for the final grade.
