Introduction/ Discussion: Anticipatory Set:
POP ART or popular culture art is a form of art that became popular in the 1960’s. Artists would take images from popular culture and turn them into forms of fine art. Many artist like Any Warhol, took images of everyday things like the Compels soup can and turn it into giant paintings. These works of art were meant to make statements on culture, sometimes for the positive, sometimes negatively and sometimes purely for fun. Many modern day street artists have become in a way the new version of pop artists with their works. Shepard Fairy was a famous tag artist with his ‘Obey’ work but his poster of Soon to be President Obama made him even more renowned and considered a main stream artists. While this form of art can lead to issues of copy right and fair use it is important to discuss its importance on society.
1. Define terms related Pop Art
POP Art- an art movement that used images from popular culture such as advertising, comics, etc.
Color – Is light. The ability of an object to absorb or reflect light determines its color.
Hue – Refers to color, primary, secondary, etc.
Primary Colors- Red Yellow, and Blue. These 3 colors cannot be created by any other color and by mixing them they can create all other colors.
Secondary Colors- Orange, Violet, and Green. – These three colors are created by mixing equal parts of 2 primary colors.
Tertiary Colors (intermediate) – Are colors created from mixing a primary color with a secondary. Creates colors such as Red Orange, Blue Green, etc. When naming the primary color’s name always go first.
Color Wheel – Is a tool that consists of at least the first 12 colors in their related locations to each other.
Copy Right- Copyright is a legal right, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to determine whether original work may be used by others
Fair Use - the doctrine that brief excerpts of copyright material may, under certain circumstances without the need for permission from or payment to the copyright holder.
GRID METHOD - One way of transposing images from one piece of paper to another using the grid method.
RULE OF THIRDS - is a "rule of thumb" or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images.
2. Students will begin the project by viewing different forms of Pop art that is being created today. Students will see the use of taking images from popular culture and learn about the general rules of copy right. Artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Shepard Fairy will be shown and the differences in their art styles.
3. Students will practice creating color wheels and discuss color theory in this project. Pop art typically uses simplified colors and rarely uses shades or Tertiary colors. Have the students create a circle with a triangle in the center of it. Put the Primary colors at each of the corners (Red, Yellow and Blue). After the students have done these 3 colors add the secondary colors in between the primary colors ( Orange, Green and Purple). Lastly add in the tertiary colors into the last 6 spots.
4. Students will be asked to create two drawings in their sketch book of their own choosing or design based on a pop art style. The Pop Art concept drawings needs to be a full page and use lots of color. Pop art uses Primary and Secondary colors almost exclusively as a way to make the art more vibrant. Students need to pull from popular culture and use images are easy to identify.
5 . For the final part of the project students will be asked to take their concept drawing and make a larger painting of it. The image will be enlarged using a grid drawing of a 2 to 1 ratio. Students will be shown examples of art work from current street artists who are using Pop art style to create their art. Students are to simplify the image using pure color. Part of the project can be completed in a choice of mediums; color pencil, watercolor paint, pencil, or markers. Students are to think critically about their image and need to reproduce their design accurately from sketch to final image.
Summary / Closure:
After completing the project students should have mastered a basic understanding of Pop art.
The students will have a completed a series of drawings as well as developed a basic understandings of the historical importance of a famous artist.
Students will have the ability to use grid drawings to recreate an image or enlarge or shrink it using different scales.
A final piece of art will be completed depicting a student’s representation of an image using cubism or 8-Bit art styles.
Evaluation: Assessment Based on Objectives:
The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the art piece, participation, effort, and quality of paper and art work.
· Students will earn a percentage for their Portfolio Review, Art Statement and Rubric.
· Quality of the work done will be a large part of the grade based on how well they have demonstrated an understanding of the concepts and their depiction. Overall condition of the final pieces will also have a factor in the grading.
· Effort put into the project will be demonstrated by both the final images and the how well the student worked in class on each project. (Factors include: is the project completed, and does it look like the student worked on it and not other things?)
· The final drawing / painting / etc… as well as the several examples of different images will be combined to make up half of the project’s grade.
