Objective: Concept
• Students will learn about Optical Illusion art.
• Students will demonstrate their understanding of Op art by creating a series of drawings using geometric shapes and basic patterns.
• Student will be introduced to a famous artist in the field cubism and optical illusion art.
• Students will define terms related to shapes.
• Students will create several images using grid, ratio, and reproduction to create art work based on cubism.
• Students will create an original final project using geometric shapes to create an image that is easily identified. It is the intent of the project to simplify an image to its basic components and create the illusion of 3d design.

• Demonstrate basic drawing skills and how to create designs related to the student’s history.
• Define terms: Optical Illusion, Geometric Shapes, Organic Shapes, Grid Drawing and Rule of Thirds,
• Students will create art work based on basic images of cones, lines, their hands and other geometric shapes.

- Students will create a 3D Cone drawing using shading and altering colors.
- Students will create a series of 3D drawings of Spheres that appear to be 3 dimensional using lines.
• Students will create a final work of art based on their concept art and either create a combination of the types of 3D images or create a new version of one of the types of art.
Required Materials:
• Paper
- Ruler
• Pencil
• Color Pencil
• Sharpie
• Erasers
• Grid paper
• Markers
• Watercolor paints (optional)
Introduction/ Discussion: Anticipatory Set:
Optical illusion is a source of art that is simple to create once you have learned the geometrical trick. Artists have been using one point perspective as a way of creating the illusion of depth for thousands of years but its importance became essential during the renaissance when artists like Leonardo DaVinci used it to create great works of art like the Last Supper. Students will be given the basic steps to create optical illusion art as well as introduced to related forms of art like Cubism. Optical Illusion art like the 3D Hand is a simple design using the human hand and lines that curve over the hand drawing in a repeating paten to make an illusion of 3dimensions. This lesson will let students learn basic geometric art skills as well as properly design images works the trick the eye into seeing a 3dimensioal shape on a 2 dimensional surface.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Start the lesson by asking the students to define terms related to Shape and 8- Bit Art.
• OPTICAL ILLUSION – an illusion that tricks how an image is perceived by the human eye.
• SHAPE- an object located in some space with height and length only.
• GEOMETRIC SHAPE- Angular shapes that are precise
• ORGANIC SHAPE - Shapes that are not regular or even
2. 3D Hand Drawing
Students will begin the project by viewing different forms of Optical illusions that are famous for the use of one point perspective and optical illusions. Each student will start with the simple hand optical illusion which uses lines and a repeating color pattern to create the illusion of dimension.
• Trace your hand on a piece of paper.
Pick 3-5 colors and begin to draw straight lines in a pattern.
• When you reach the hand leave the hand blank and continue the pattern for the entire page.
• Go back to the hand and draw the lines so that they curve over the hand connecting one side to the other.
Fill in all the lines with solid colors.
3. 3 Dimension Cone
is a drawing that uses a combination of one point perspective and repeating colors to create the illusion of realism. Students will complete the project using a combination of 2 to 4 colors with geometric shapes that give the illusion of a 3 dimensional cone.
• Take a piece of paper and draw lines from one corner to another.
• Add lines from through the center from top to bottom and side to side.
• Pick one triangle to start with and draw curved lines all going in the same direction from the center out.
• From the same place draw curved lines going the opposite direction. Continue to alternate which way the lines go in each triangle. All lines must connect to each other.
• Continue with an alternating pattern of “frowny face” and “smiley face” all the way around the paper.
Start with one cone and shade in every other band with a dark color.
• Shade in the other bands with lighter colors.
• Repeat the design with a different color.
4. Final Project:
For the final part of the project students design an original work of art based on their concept drawings. Students may choose to add to one of the drawing styles or create a new work that incorporates the two types of optical illusions. Researching other forms of optical illusion art may also be incorporated in this part of the final. The final art may incorporate media like pencil, crayon or markers, even a mixed media maybe be used.
Summary / Closure:
After completing the project students should have mastered a basic understanding of shapes, Cubism and optical illusion art.
The students will have a completed a series of drawings as well as developed a basic understandings of the historical importance of a famous artist.
Students will have the ability to use grid drawings to recreate an image or enlarge or shrink it using different scales.
A final piece of art will be completed depicting a student’s representation of an image using multiple types of optical illusions as well as one point perspective.
Evaluation: Assessment Based on Objectives:
The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the art piece, participation, effort, and quality of paper and art work.
• Students will earn a percentage for their Portfolio Review, both as presenter and as audience.
• Quality of the work done will be a large part of the grade based on how well they have demonstrated an understanding of the concepts and their depiction. Overall condition of the final pieces will also have a factor in the grading.
• Effort put into the project will be demonstrated by both the final images and the how well the student worked in class on each project. (Factors include: is the project completed, and does it look like the student worked on it and not other things?)
• The final drawing / painting / etc… as well as the several examples of different images will be combined to make up half of the project’s grade.
• A six week test on the vocabulary will also be used as a grade to determine the student understands of the subject matter.
• The Rubrics are made up of 5 categories: Project completion (30%), Participation (20%), Originality (20%), Quality of art work (20%), and Follows directions (10 %).
Artist Statement Should Have.
• Name (your name)
• Art works title.
• Date of work. (date it was finished)
• Explanation of why you make your art the way it is. (What inspired you).
• How did you make the art.
• Describe your art work to the viewer.
