Identity Self Portrait

Objective: Concept / Topic to teach:

· Students will learn about Shape, Value, Line and Space, through drawing faces.

· Students will define drawing related terms.

· Students will create drawings in their sketch books of individual parts of the face as well as proportions and an overall image.

· Each student will create a portrait based on their own face as well as a character from a story.

Math: Grade 8 (4.1) Transformations of objects can be used to define the concepts of congruence and similarity. (4.2) Direct and indirect measurement can be used to describe and make comparisons.

Literacy: Grade 8 (1.1) 1. Oral Expression and Listening. (2.1) 1. Quality comprehension and interpretation of literary texts demand self-monitoring and self-assessment. (3.3) Quality reasoning relies on supporting evidence in media.

Specific Objectives:

· Complete 3-4 drawings in their sketchbooks of each major part of the face (eyes, etc).

· Define terms: Line, Shape, Value, Perspective, Proportion, Space, etc.

· Develop a basic understanding of the structure of the human face.

· Draw a series of concept sketches of how they want their final picture to look.

· Create 4 drawings of things that best represent their identity (items locations, or professions).

· Create a final drawing based on their own face and combining it with items that best represent their identity.

· Learn about the Elements of Art; Shape, Form, Value and Space through a series of drawings

Introduction

The easiest thing for anyone to recognize is the human face. We are trained to see and observe it from the beginning of our lives. Students will be given the assignment of developing their artistic skill by drawing the human face through a series of drawings. To build an understanding of the total face it is important to master each of the individual features one at a time before putting them altogether. At the end of this project students will use their understanding of the face and basic drawing skills to create an original work of art. The final image will combine their image with that of items or ideas that they feel represent their identity. It is a time honored tradition of artist to understand the human form and to be able to depict it in a realistic manner. These students will be able to appreciate the subtleties of the face as well as the Elements of art used to create its likeness.

1. Define:

• Proportion - How parts of a work of art relate to each other and the entire image.

• Perspective - Is a graphic system that creates the Illusion of depth and volume on a two dimensional surface.

• Point of View - Is the angle from which the viewer sees an object.

2. To prepare the students for the process of drawing the human face it is best to break the human face into separate sections first. Students will spend time drawing each the major features of the face such as eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Each class will be broken into a different part of the face with instruction on drawing the specific feature from different angles and emotions. Before the student has mastered the different features they will be given a picture of that feature and asked to draw it from scratch. This process will require several drawings per section in the sketch books.

3. Once the students have mastered the individual parts of the face like the eyes, nose, mouth and ears students will be given a demonstration on putting them together and the correct proportions. Students should draw examples of the face at different angles and with different moods as a way to understand the process of creating a drawing of the face. These drawings should be completed in the sketch book and be used for future reference. To complete this part of the project students will be given an image to draw from and create their own version of in their sketchbook.

4. The final project will be a self portrait that each student will complete on a sheet of paper at least 12x16 inches in size. Each student will be asked to use a mirror or a picture of themselves to create a detail picture of themselves. This project is intended to take several classes and should be shaded in with detail. Students are encouraged to use strong emotions and or different poses from the common front view. Once completed students should have a good basic understanding of how to draw a portrait. Half of the picture should include the images of things that they feel best represent themselves or their identities. The art work can be completed with color pencil, pastels, or in black and white.

5. This project will be concluded with a portfolio review in which the students will present their works and critique the overall effect.

• Describe your art work to the viewer.
