• Create a series of drawings that represent the things that are most important to them.
• Demonstrate basic drawing skills and how to create designs or image of their lives.
• Students will divide the paper into a minimum of 10 triangles.
• 1 triangle must be done using only 1 color plus black and white.
• Students will create a self portrait of themselves in one of the triangles
• 1 triangle must be of a specific thing like their favorite food or movie.
• 1 triangle can only use one color plus black and white.
Required Materials:
• Paper 18x24 inches.
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Color Pencil
• Sharpie
• Erasers
Introduction/ Discussion: Anticipatory Set:
As a way to get to know the students this project is designed to allow the students to illustrate their lives. Each student is asked to divide a piece of paper into a series of at least 10 triangles. Within each triangle the student is to draw an image that represents one part of their lives. The images should be of their favorite things or the things that are the most important to them. Students are also to draw a self portrait of themselves which can be of their faces or their entire bodies. Each self portrait can be of how they are or how they would like to be in the future. One of the triangles can only use a single color plus black and white. Another triangle will have no color other than black and white. One last triangle should represent a specific drawing like their favorite food or movie. Each drawing will show their interests or the things that make up their lives.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Start the lesson by asking the students to think about the things that are most important to them.
2. Students will be given a large sheet of paper and rulers to use to draw 10 different triangles. Once the students have at least 10 triangle they will begin drawing images that represent the things they are most interest in. Each triangle will have a specific theme or idea. Students will draw a self portrait, one image of their favorite food or movie and they are limited in using only color for a triangle.
3. Once the students have completed basic drawings the students will use color pencils to color in their works of art. The triangles that are limited to only one color can be mixed with neighboring colors on the color wheel. Each triangle will be completely filled in with solid colors.
4. This project will be concluded with a portfolio review in which the students will present their works and critique the overall effect.
Students will complete a rubric scoring their work as well as a written artist statement describing their work as well as the process.
Summary / Closure:
After completing the project students should have mastered a basic understanding of what each project will entail in their projects.
The final work will show different images that represent their live and the things that are the most important to them.
Evaluation: Assessment Based on Objectives:
The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the art piece, participation, effort, and quality of paper and art work.
• Students will earn a percentage for their Portfolio Review, both as presenter and as audience.
• Quality of the work done will be a large part of the grade based on how well they have demonstrated an understanding of the concepts and their depiction. Overall condition of the final pieces will also have a factor in the grading.
• Effort put into the project will be demonstrated by both the final images and the how well the student worked in class on each project. (Factors include: is the project completed, and does it look like the student worked on it and not other things?)
• The final drawing / painting / etc… as well as the several examples of different images will be combined to make up half of the project’s grade.
• A six week test on the vocabulary will also be used as a grade to determine the student understands of the subject matter.
• The Rubrics are made up of 5 categories: Project completion (30%), Participation (20%), Originality (20%), Quality of art work (20%), and Follows directions (10 %).
Additional Components that can be included:
Plan for independent practice:
Students who are at a higher level or who have class on a greater number of days will also be given the added task of creating a second art project using a famous artist and depicting their lives.
Adaptations:
Those students with physical disabilities will be asked to either create simple shapes or have other students assist them in the creation of their art. It is acceptable for some students to create drawings and images of their lives without the specific color combinations or they can create images using patterns or color designs.
Extensions (For gifted students): Students who complete the assignment early will be given the added assignment of creating a second art project using greater detail in their design or attempt to create a more in-depth work of art.
A project depicting the life of a famous person can also be completed using the previously listed requirements. An example of this would be: The life of Leonardo DaVinci or the life of Abraham Lincoln.
Artist Statement Should Have.
• Name (your name)
• Art works title.
• Date of work. (date it was finished)
• Explanation of why you make your art the way it is. (What inspired you).
• How did you make the art.
• Describe your art work to the viewer.
