Mr. Beery's Holy Crusaders
Oyaz! Oyaz! Welcome to Mr. Beery's 3rd Grade Class
My name is Jordon Beery and I am one of the 3rd Grade teacher at St. Monica Catholic School. I am currently in my 6th year as a teacher at this great school and love every minute of it.
In 3rd Grade, we will focus many of our studies around Theology, Classic Literature, and Medieval History. In Theology, this will mean learning the parables that Jesus tells in the Bible, using the Bible to understand the Mass, and looking at relationships between literature characters and biblical people to help develop our morality. We will also look at saints that are related to our areas of study including St. Joan of Arc, St. Patrick, St. Olaf of Norway, St. Thomas Becket, St. Thomas Aquinas, The Venerable Bede, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, St. Dominic, and so many more.
For Reading and English Language Arts (ELA), we will work on handwriting, learning cursive, and reading books like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Secret Garden, The Trumpet and the Swan, and King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table. We will also be learning Latin as a new language, but also as a way to teach all of our ELA basics: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, direct objects, indirect objects, etc.
For History/Social Studies, we will focus on Medieval history. We will delve into what Medieval society were like, how they communicate by focusing on Illuminated Manuscripts and Iconography, Knights and Ladies, Vikings, Crusades, and so much more. We will also use the information we learn to compare and contrast life in the State of Michigan. It will give us a base to learn Michigan history throughout the school year.
We will also learn Addition/Subtraction strategies, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, 2-D & 3-D shapes, Time, Area, and Perimeter in our Mathematics class.
In Science, we will learn about plant and animal life cycles, physical forces like gravity and magnets, and there will be a unit on weather. We will also do investigations in order to put our scientific learning into action.
