Sawangan is derived from the word “SAWANG” a Mansaka word, which means two hills facing each other. The said two hills are located at the entrance before entering the barangay proper.
Sawangan is dominated by the Mansaka tribes. They were the first native settlers of the place.
Sawangan is composed of 8 puroks. It was created on November 8, 1949 by Executive No. 351. The first designated Kapitan del barrio was Francisco Matalib. He was followed by Late Eulogio Lico then by Vicente Lusdoc. Followed by the first Tenyente del barrio who was Anatolio Barcina followed by Anatolio Millanes then by Romeo Tabo-tabo and Esteban Banquil. The first elected Barangay Captain was Porferio Hinayon followed by Esteban Banquil as OIC then by Efren Gil Valdehueza as Barangay Captain and elected Barangay Captain Manolito G. Cuasito. Lastly, the present Barangay Chairman is Renante Q. Francisco elected as Barangay Captain.
Sawangan Elementary School was created last 1969 with the first teachers Mr. Antonio Paris and Mrs. Gomercenda Garcerona. At present, it is headed by Mr. Hilario J. Moquera, Jr., School Principal that has five school buildings with seven classrooms and nine teachers who handles classes from kindergarten and grade 1 to 6. Sawangan Day Care Center (MSWD) is also present in the barangay with one teacher and one classroom.
Electricity was installed at purok 1 in the year 1994 with the first consumers Mr. And Mrs. Tito Amihan, Mr. And Mrs. Esteban Banquil, Mr. And Mrs. Porferio Hinayon, Mr. and Mrs. Delfin Macalanga and Mrs. Mamerta Cañete.
In 1958, Lono-lono Primary School at Purok 5 at the area of Mr. Rebucas who donated school site was being constructed with 1 building that has four rooms with 2 teachers who handle the four classes. This school year, Luno-luno Elementary School has complete Elementary Education and has Kindergarten Class under the Department of Education with 5 classrooms and 4 teachers who handles classes from kindergarten and grades 1 to 6.
Spring Development at purok 3 and 4 came in the year 1997, under the management of Late Barangay Captain Efren Gil P. Valdehueza through the CIDSS project of DSWD which is presently managed by the Barangay Captain Manolito G. Cuasito.
In 2007, CAFGU Detachment was being constructed. At present, it is headed by Sergeant Wilson Sapao.
J and B Quarry Sand and Gravel begin in the year 2006 and started its quarrying business at Purok 1 with its area accounting for 2.5 hectares.
Sawangan has a total population of 2,206. It has 8 existing puroks which include Purok 1 – Sentro, Purok 1-A – Sitio Pagod, Purok 1-B – Sitio Banga, Purok 2 – Crossing Napnapan and Cawangwan, Purok 3 – Napnapan, Purok 4 - Cawangwan, Purok 5 – Lower Lono-lono and Purok 6 – Upper Lono-lono. It also consists of 467 households with an average household size of 5.
