The Chainsmokers, composed of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, had noticed how the word selfie had become a trend and they wanted to take advantage of it. They made a demo of a song containing a monologue from a female clubber about taking good selfies.[1] Inspiration came from the regular club going women that the Chainsmokers saw on their nights out in New York City. So when they were composing the track, they wanted to incorporate the "let me take a selfie" line in it somehow. The Chainsmokers described in an interview with The Phoenix New Times,

Honestly, "#Selfie" is kind of a phenomenon for us. We made it and thought it was funny and put it out as an edit. Then Dim Mak wanted to buy it, and they bought it from us and put it out officially and we made a video for it. This was all just because we thought it was fun. And then the song just kind of took on a life of its own. Which is honestly really great because it's brought in a new audience of people that listen to music that we've made that we're more passionate about.[2]

"#Selfie" is a big room house song that is predominantly instrumental, though featuring spoken word verses; the uncredited talking female vocals in the song are by Alexis Killacam.[3][8] The song details a narcissistic young woman at a club, presumably speaking to friends, as she is concerned about taking selfies and uploading them to her Instagram account, while she criticizes other people at the club, including their outfits, in addition to dealing with a guy named Jason with whom she has a love/hate relationship. At the end of each spoken verse, she says "Let me take a selfie".[9] The intonation of the spoken lyrics bears a strong resemblance to that of the opening of Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1992 single "Baby Got Back". Similar to "#Selfie", the words are critical of the appearance of another woman. The lyrics make several cultural references, including Instagram and the Cedric Gervais remix of Lana Del Rey's song, "Summertime Sadness".

The song has been compared to the viral impact of "Harlem Shake" by Baauer. The Chainsmokers explained that one of their initial intentions with "#Selfie" was to re-create the viral impact that "Harlem Shake" had, with the general public taking the song and maybe including their own interpretations along with the beat. The structure of it has drawn comparisons to the 1982 hit "Valley Girl" by Frank Zappa and his daughter, Moon Unit Zappa.[10][11][12]

In the United Kingdom, "#Selfie" debuted at number 115 on the UK Singles Chart and moved to number 42 the next week.[21] The song finally peaked at number 11 in the UK. In Australia "#Selfie" debuted at number 98 on the ARIA Charts, and moved to a peak of number 3.[22][23]

While they had released a few singles before this, #Selfie was the first of many hits for The Chainsmokers. Originally created as a joke, the song somehow went top 20 in America and went Platinum in 6 countries. The songs lyrics are honestly way too relatable and I can name countless girls I went to school with who have said most of these lines. A guilty pleasure bop, the song did introduce the world to The Chainsmokers so it's in my good books. It also spawned what is easily the cringiest thing The Chainsmokers have ever done in performing it on American Idol.

"I'm on my way to a town hall - but first, let me take a selfie," the Wisconsin Republican says in an adaption of the popular music video. Duffy's impressively edited 40-second rendition features him posing in photos with House Speaker John Boehner, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Rep. Paul Ryan, his home state Gov. Scott Walker and even Barbara Walters, among others.

"They need to know that a lot of what's happening now will impact their futures," he said. "If taking a 'selfie' with the chair of the SEC, Steny Hoyer or Alzheimer's research advocates gets their attention, then it's worth it. Plus, it's fun."

ICYMI: The singer briefly paused her Miranda Lambert: Velvet Rodeo The Las Vegas Residency show on July 15 to call out a group of concertgoers for taking selfies during her performance of "Tin Man." As seen in video circulating on social media, Lambert told the audience, "These girls are worried about their selfie and not listening to the song. It's pissing me off a little bit."

The group, The Chainsmokers, is a DJ duo came out with the "#SELFIE" in early 2014. It features heavy electronic beats and a judgmental voice of a woman's experience taking a selfie at a club. Sounds like a dream come true, right? Well for the ABC show by the same name, the song actually is a dream come true, as the woman in the song represents the main character Eliza, to a T, before her journey of self-exploration and becoming less shallow. In addition to that, the song is... actually catchy? Did I say that right? It feels so wrong saying a song named "#SELFIE" is catchy, but it is. "#SELFIE" by The Chainsmokers is catchy. Damnit. Listen for yourself.

The upset fan later posted the group shots she'd managed to take to Instagram, along with the caption: "These are the 2 pictures we were talking when Miranda Lambert stopped her concert and told us to sit down and not take selfies."

CORNISH: You can still contribute your own selfie - remember to include what you consider your generic identity categories as well as what you wish people knew about you. Use the hashtag #NPRCensus on Twitter and Instagram.

Miranda Lambert stirred up controversy during her Las Vegas residency when she stopped mid-show to chastise a group of women who were reportedly taking selfies during one of her more emotional songs.

Several weeks ago, singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha, 33, was injured in New York City by a fan who hurled his phone at her and smacked her in the eye, forcing her to cancel the remainder of her concert and get stitches.

This song is satire of everyone's self obsession of visual social networks and how connected with electronic lifestyle everyone is in their day to day lives. Thats why the valley girl voice, lyrics, and attitude were perfect for this playful parody of snobbish party girls.

Todd (VO): Because if you can't tell, and I have no idea why someone would do this, it's a song specifically designed to be obnoxious, filled with the noise of the most vacuous idiots doing the most vacuous things... Well, let me...

Todd (VO): This was carefully packaged and promoted behind the scenes to look like a viral meme, but isn't. This is AstroTurf, through and through. [New York Times article: "A-Listers, Meet Your Online Megaphone"] See, there's this company started by [pictures of the actual people played by...] Justin Timberlake in The Social Network (Sean Parker) and Jeremy Piven in Entourage (Ari Emanuel) that specifically shepherded "#selfie" into popular consciousness.

Todd (VO): Basically, it's a bunch of obnoxious club girl cliches set to a beat. It's just like [brief clip of...] "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen," except it's stupid on purpose. [Clip of...] Frank Zappa made this song in 1981. It was called "Valley Girl."

Todd (VO): Like...I've got an idea. Why don't I write a song called "#DUMBSLUT," and the chick in it'd go, "God, I'm a dumb slut," so everyone would [pictures of three people laughing and pointing...] laugh at the dumb slut, [...and of a crying girl walking away] (

Todd: ...so what? Here, I'll take a picture of myself right now. [Pulls phone out of pocket and takes a selfie. The selfie is actually Justin Bieber.] See? Did the world end? Sorry if the kids nowadays don't sit around [picture of...] making candles or whatever you guys did at parties when you were in college.

Todd (VO): Like, there's no joke in the sense of there being a punchline or a witty observation. [Clip of...] "Valley Girl" at least has Frank Zappa providing commentary on this dippy hose beast. But "#selfie" isn't commenting, it's just imitating. It's just a boring person saying boring things to boring music. 2351a5e196
