*Decipher between emergencies that may require your family to shelter in place or to evacuate your location.
*Decide where you would go and what route you would take to get there, such as:
A hotel/motel
The home of friends or relatives a safe distance away
An evacuation shelter
*Plot various alternate routes on your map in case of road closures. Make sure you have locations and maps saved on devices such as cell phones and GPS unit and also paper maps in case of loss of digital services.
*Create a list of things you would like to quickly grab in case of an evacuation.
*Consider various transportation/navigational needs and alternate resources if necessary.
Practice your plan with all members of your household
*Practice all possible elements of your plans with your family at least yearly and update as needed.
*Practice evacuating your home twice a year. Grab your emergency kit, just like you would in a real emergency, then drive your planned evacuation route. Practice traveling each alternate route.
*Make sure every family member knows the plan, including how to shut off utilities.
