EXTREME HEAT:
A PERIOD OF HIGH HEAT & HUMIDITY WITH TEMPERATURES ABOVE 90 DEGREES FOR AT LEAST 2 OR 3 DAYS
ADDITIONAL HOME-COOLING TIPS:
*Weather-strip doors & windows
*Use an attic ventilator or fan to clear out the hot air from your home's attic
*Line windows with aluminum foil to reflect the heat
*Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device - they create a false sense of comfort by only creating air flow - not air cooling. They do not reduce body temperatures! In fact, in temperatures above 90degrees, a fan can increase your body temperature.
*Cooler areas of homes: northsides rather than southsides; basements; uncarpeted areas
If you are unable to afford home-cooling costs, weatherization, or energy-related home repairs,
contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help.

ADDITIONAL GENERAL COOLING TIPS:
*Avoid outdoor activities between 10AM & 3PM
*While shade doesn't make the actual temperature cooler, your body can benefit - being in direct sunlight can make the air feel 10 to 15 degrees warmer because of the sun's rays being in contact with your skin.
*Getting clothing wet can act like an evaporative cooler
*Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot to your pet’s feet.
*Eat light meals with more fruits & vegetables that produce less body fat and decrease water loss
