Lake District scramble weekend

Join us to complete two of the lakes classic scrambles over the Easter weekend.

so what is Scrambling?

Scrambling is not an easy concept to explain to people but It is best described as a component element of mountaineering/ climbing along with hill walking, snow and ice climbing and rock climbing.

At the lower end of the scale in being in the hills there is walking on paths and routes, while at the top end, the extreme and romantic side if you like, there is technical climbing on rock and ice.

so for people to start to move on and take the next step after walking we have this imaginary progression known as scrambling, where you need to use both hands and feet to progress or move on the rock; it begins in reality where walking ends and finishes where rock climbing with equipment begins.

so if you feel you have a head for heights and a sense of adventure we can offer the classic weekend scrambling in the Lake District with the two classic routes one two days for a full-on scrambling day in the fells.

We will start the Saturday in Glenridding to tackle Helvellyn via striding edge and come down via swiral edge then on Sunday we move to do Blencathra via Halls fell ridge down to scales tarn then up via Sharp edge back to Blencathra. Two full days with qualified guides

Scrambling Grades

Just as rock climbs are graded for difficulty, so are scrambles. Most guidebooks have adopted three grades of difficulty for scrambles and occasionally a fourth for serious routes. these are graded 1,2,3 & 4. both of these scrambles are grade 1

so what is a Grade 1 scramble

Grade 1 scrambles are fairly straightforward, rough or exposed walks, with some difficult manoeuvres where you need to use hands and feet. Route finding is usually obvious, with considerable choice. Ropes are not usually required and escape or retreat is invariably easy.

The weekend will start on the Saturday and end on Sunday. You will need to arrange your own accommodation with some good camp sites available as well as bunkhouses and B&Bs
