At the end of the 19th century the first major mass-production firms were set up. In 1898, Triumph Motorcycles in England began producing motorbikes, and by 1903 it was producing over 500 bikes. Other British firms were Royal Enfield, Norton, Douglas Motorcycles and Birmingham Small Arms Company who began motorbike production in 1899, 1902, 1907 and 1910, respectively.[24] Indian began production in 1901 and Harley-Davidson was established two years later. By the outbreak of World War I, the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world was Indian,[25][26]producing over 20,000 bikes per year.[27]

During the First World War, motorbike production was greatly ramped up for the war effort to supply effective communications with front line troops. Messengers on horses were replaced with despatch riders on motorcycles carrying messages, performing reconnaissance and acting as a military police. American company Harley-Davidson was devoting over 50% of its factory output toward military contract by the end of the war. The British company Triumph Motorcycles sold more than 30,000 of its Triumph Type H model to allied forces during the war. With the rear wheel driven by a belt, the Model H was fitted with a 499 cc (30.5 cu in) air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine. It was also the first Triumph without pedals.[28][better source needed]

I ride an e-bike and I often see motorbike rides recorded as an e-bike ride. They have ridiculous speeds (above 100 km/h) and lead all segments and I'm getting tired of flagging them. It would be great if these were cleaned up automatically based on maximum speed.

Per the FAQ below, our Garmin Fitness watches will only detect certain types of exercise such as biking, running, swimming, walking, or using an elliptical machine. The wrist position on a motorbike will be very similar to cycling. Additionally, there is no way to manually record a motorbike activity either, as there is no such activity profile.

Thanks Garmin-Kevin! Doesn't fix my problem, but at least I know my only option is to turn off Move IQ. Do you know if Move IQ is being actively improved? It shouldn't be hard to tell the difference between riding a bike, at say, 15-20 mph and driving a motorcycle/motorbike at 35+ mph for an extended amount of time.

This may seem a stupid question but.... I wonder if anyone has tried using their Edge 830 as navigation device on a motorbike? Did it work? Any tricks / tips on the best profile settings?! Any way of stopping this "Motorbike" data affecting your stats (or ensuring it doesn't get sync'ed with Strava)?

I haven't recently used an Edge on a motorcycle but ~10 years ago or so I used my Edge 705 on my motorcycle. It worked exactly the same as it did on the bicycle. I haven't tried any of the newer units since, but I suspect it'd be the same. Of course there's no motorbike category in Garmin Connect (AFAIK) and if you plan on recording and saving rides, you probably don't want them aggregated with your cycling running and other fitness activities, so you'll need to figure out some workaround. Garmin does make a moto specific GPS unit.

If you like coffee, why not enjoy it fresh at a coffee plantation? The area around Dalat holds many coffee farms, but this is among the most famous, and conveniently located on the motorbike loop from Dalat.

We went to Koh Lanta and stayed in the Old Town, knowing we would want to rent a motorbike to get around the island. There is only so much within walking distance and although we could take taxis, it would be more exciting, convenient, and cheaper to get around by motorbike rental on Koh Lanta. The problem was that neither Rebecca nor I had ever driven a motorbike! Although nervous, we decided to go for it and had one of the most incredible days beach hopping and going to a vegan restaurant for lunch. If you are thinking of renting a motorbike but have never driven or ridden one before, please keep reading.

Or rental guy showed us how to operate the motorbike, then Rebecca and I took the bike to a quiet street to practice riding solo. We each did a few laps and it was evident that I was picking it up quicker, which I think had more to do with driving confidence than actual ability. I thought motorbikes were more like motorcycles with a clutch, but that is not the case! You turn on the motorbike and twist the handle and off you go. Still, the practice circles were critical to getting used to turning, braking, maneuvering, etc.

If you have never tried motorbiking before Laos is a great place to try! The Thakhek loop in Laos is an easy 4-day ride and a great way to learn the basics before trying this longer Northern Vietnam motorbike loop.

Our recommended route is for motorbike touring North of Hanoi. It starts and ends in Hanoi. This means you can rent your motorbike if you do not plan to embark on a quick visa run and extend your time in Vietnam.

This is your comprehensive packing list for doing the motorbike loop through North Vietnam in winter or shoulder season when you will experience at least some cold weather. In summer, you can adjust this list by swapping one warm weather outfit for one of the cold.

Day one is one of the most technically challenging days of the loop simply because you have to drive in Hanoi city. Pure chaos. I highly recommend picking your motorbike up the night before so you can leave early in the morning with less traffic. Honestly, the earlier the better. 6 AM if you can.

Since the Ha Giang Loop in Yen Minh province is one of the most popular routes for backpackers motorbiking Vietnam, it can be quite crowded. Some people hire a driver- this is known as a Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider. Other people join Ha Giang motorbike tours where they drive in groups of 20+ people.

The middle 40 KM or so is a muddy, rutted, sloppy nightmare if it has rained recently. Hopefully, this will change as construction finishes but who knows when that will be. Take your time and leave early. This is why good tires are so important for the Ha Giang motorbike loop.

This is where we left our stuff in Hanoi and found them to be friendly and helpful rather than pushy with tours. Also, they have a great laundry service for cheap that you will definitely need to take advantage of after this giant North Vietnam motorbike loop.

Still not convinced you can learn to drive a motorbike by yourself? DC Motorbikes have a sister company, called Ride With Me Saigon, which provides 1-on-1 motorbike lessons in Saigon that might help you to gain confidence and offer full support.

As we live in Vietnam, having a motorbike is a pretty essential part of getting into daily life. So, I guess this post is mostly directed towards those who are reading our blog because either they live in Vietnam/Asia too or they are hoping to move! Nice! Where do you ride?

I enjoyed reading your article. I would just add that anyone that wishes to ride a motorbike in Vietnam should first do so at home. Master the basics in a familiar setting before riding in a setting that is like no other.

I have been exploring the world for about 8 years and traveling Vietnam by motorbike is still one of my all time favorite adventures. Whether exploring the whole country by bike or just doing a motorbike day tour, a motorbike adventure is something you have to experience when traveling in Vietnam.

There are amazing options for guided motorbike tours to experience Vietnam by bike in safe way. Go on a fun tour in the roads of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi or Hoi An exploring the cities with an experienced driver on a foodie, sightseeing, culture or shopping tour.

When going on a motorbike trip through Vietnam you have three options to get a bike; buy a bike, rent a bike or go on a guided tour. Buying a bike is the cheapest option since you can sell your bike again after your trip, but is more risky since you can buy a lot of problems. Renting is more hassles with insurance and returning the bike. A tour can be nice, especially if you do not feel confident driving and can sit on the back you obviously do not have the freedom you have cruising with your own bike.

The Bluecard is your proof of ownership and identifies the bikes engine number, frame number, license plate number, and owner of the motorbike. You need bluecard for selling the bike, when transfering the bike on public transport (train) or when crossing the border to Laos or Cambodia.

I was told that you can drive a 50cc motorbike in Vietnam without a license, this is to small to do a long trip you will be riding at least a 100cc bike. This is my experience, always confirm with official sources.

Our trip started in Hanoi riding south, many do it in reverse. Mostly on the Ho Chi Min trail, which was beautiful. Some days we drove on Highway one, many trucks and thousands of motorbikes everywhere. Try to avoid this as far as possible. We drove about 2500km and did the trip in 5 weeks. Only 12 driving days, driving between 2 and 8 hours a day.

Awesome info, thanks man! A detailed question: we (a group of 4, me + my gf on 1 bike, and two other friends on separate bikes) are going to visit Vietnam upcoming January/February. From 10 January till 30th January, we thought about going pretty much the whole North (Hanoi start and then going to Sapa, Ha Giang, close to the border of China, then to Ha Long Bay and go back to Hanoi) - so that would be 20 days. Do you have any recommendations on how to handle that on our own (we are experienced SE Asia travelers and know how to ride bikes there) - our main problem is how to handle the backpacks - I'm especially asking for me+my gf as we are going to be on 1 bike haha, while two other friends will ride their own bike and I know they can fit a backpack on the backside. Any solutions for 2 backpacks or if we fit everything in one, what to do with the other backpack these 20 days - maybe possible to leave it in the rental motorbike house in Hanoi? And will even 1 backpack fit with two of us on the bike haha? Thanks once again for taking the time to read, think and hopefully reply :) 006ab0faaa
