If you want heavy-duty, all-weather protection for your vehicle's interior floor that handles mud, snow, and road salt without slipping, choose Motor Trend MotorTrend FlexTough Black; if you need a custom-fit, instant-deploy sun shield specifically designed to keep the cabin of a full-size pickup truck cool and protect the dashboard from UV damage, choose weektic Truck Windshield Sun.
These two products serve fundamentally different purposes in your daily routine, yet both are essential upgrades for anyone who drives a workhorse vehicle. One is about containment and durability against the elements below, while the other is about thermal regulation and preservation above. I have analyzed the specifications and design intent of both to help you decide which one belongs in your garage or van life setup right now. Whether you are living out of a Ford F-150 or a Silverado, understanding the specific trade-offs between these two tools will save you money on unnecessary accessories later.
• Motor Trend MotorTrend FlexTough Black: Its biggest strength is its rugged, universal trim-to-fit design that blocks water, dirt, and debris effectively, but it requires manual cutting and only covers the front footwells, leaving the rear exposed.
• weektic Truck Windshield Sun: Its biggest strength is its 100% coverage custom fit with a double-thickened ice crystal coating that blocks 99.9% of UV rays instantly, but it is strictly limited to full-size pickup trucks and does not offer general-purpose utility.
• Who each pick is for: Choose Motor Trend for drivers who prioritize keeping their floors clean from winter grime or construction messes, and choose weektic for truck owners who spend long hours parked in the sun and want to preserve their interior leather and plastics.
The Motor Trend FlexTough Black mats are built for the driver who treats their vehicle like a tool rather than just a mode of transport. If you drive a compact SUV, a small truck, or a sedan that sees rain, snow, or mud regularly, this mat system is designed to trap that mess inside its raised channels rather than letting it spread across your carpet.
What makes this product stand out is the "FlexTough" rubber construction combined with an anti-slip backing featuring non-skid nibs. This isn't just about stopping the mat from sliding around; it's about safety. When you are braking hard or turning sharply, you do not want a floor mat shifting under your feet. The raised channels act as a barrier, holding spills and liquid away from the vehicle's electrical components and carpet padding. For someone living a van life lifestyle where space is tight and cleanliness is paramount, being able to simply shake off dirt or rinse the mat with water is a massive time-saver compared to vacuuming out soaked carpets every week.
However, you must understand the limitations before buying. This is a front-row-only solution. The package includes only two pieces for the driver and front passenger, meaning the back seat remains vulnerable to dirt kicked up from the front or tracked in by pets. Furthermore, because it is a "universal trim-to-fit" product, it does not come pre-cut for your specific model year. You will need to use the provided dimensions (26.5x17.5 inches) and cut the mats yourself to ensure they hug your footwells properly. If you are looking for a plug-and-play experience that covers the entire cabin, this might feel like extra work. But if you value a durable, heavy-duty barrier that can take a beating and still look good, this is the choice for you.

The weektic Truck Windshield Sun shade is engineered exclusively for the full-size pickup truck owner who faces intense solar exposure daily. Unlike generic shades that leave gaps or require complex assembly, this product uses 1:1 precise vehicle scan data to guarantee a gap-free fit against the windshield of models like the Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Chevy Silverado, and GMC Sierra. The design philosophy here is speed and precision. In a matter of seconds, you can deploy the umbrella-style shade, and in another five seconds, fold it back into its dustproof capsule case. This compact storage means it fits easily into door pockets, making it accessible without cluttering your glove box.
The core value of this product lies in its thermal and UV protection capabilities. The data specifies a "double-thickened ice crystal coating" that is 40% thicker than previous models. This multi-layer composite fabric, paired with reinforced ribs that are 30% thicker, creates a formidable barrier against the sun. It claims to block 99.9% of UV rays and offers UPF 100+ protection. For truck owners, this is critical. A hot dashboard doesn't just make the interior uncomfortable; it accelerates the aging of leather seats, cracks plastic dashboards, and releases harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from adhesives and materials. By keeping the vehicle cooler, you protect the longevity of your interior components.
This product is not a universal accessory; it is highly specialized. If you do not own one of the listed full-size trucks, this shade will not work for you. The installation testing mentioned in the specs suggests a high level of confidence in the fit, ensuring no light leakage that would defeat the purpose of cooling the cabin. For a van lifer using a converted truck bed or a camper van based on a chassis cab, this could be a game-changer during summer camping trips where parking in direct sunlight is unavoidable. However, it serves no purpose outside of the windshield area, so it does not replace the need for floor protection or side window coverings.
• Best for All-Weather Floor Protection → Motor Trend MotorTrend FlexTough Black
If your primary concern is mud, salt, water, and debris getting onto your carpets, the rubberized, channel-trapping design of the Motor Trend mats is superior to any windshield shade.
• Best for Heat Reduction and UV Blocking → weektic Truck Windshield Sun
If your goal is to lower the interior temperature and prevent dashboard fading, the ice crystal coating and 100% coverage of the weektic shade provide thermal protection that floor mats cannot match.
• Best for Installation Speed → weektic Truck Windshield Sun
The umbrella mechanism allows for deployment in 5 seconds with zero tools required, whereas the Motor Trend mats require measuring and cutting to achieve a proper fit.
• Best for Durability Against Physical Wear → Motor Trend MotorTrend FlexTough Black
• Best for Custom Fit Precision → weektic Truck Windshield Sun
Designed specifically for full-size trucks using scan data, it eliminates gaps and light leaks, whereas the Motor Trend mats are universal and rely on user modification for fitment.
• Best for Easy Cleaning → Motor Trend MotorTrend FlexTough Black
You can hose down the rubber mats or shake them off immediately, while the weektic shade requires careful folding and storage in its capsule to maintain the integrity of the fabric and ribs.
• Best for Van Life Interior Preservation → weektic Truck Windshield Sun
For those living in vehicles where heat buildup can ruin furniture and electronics, the ability to block 99.9% of UV rays instantly is the most critical feature for maintaining a livable environment.
• Best for Budget-Friendly General Utility → Motor Trend MotorTrend FlexTough Black
While pricing varies, the universal nature of the Motor Trend mats means they can be used on multiple vehicles or swapped out easily, offering more versatility than a truck-specific sunshade.
I would buy the weektic Truck Windshield Sun for my own full-size pickup truck, especially if I were using it for van life or frequent outdoor adventures. The reason is simple: heat management is often the silent killer of vehicle interiors and comfort. No amount of floor protection can stop the sun from baking your dashboard or making the steering wheel too hot to touch. The weektic shade solves that problem instantly with its custom fit and thick, reflective coating. It is a proactive solution that preserves the value of your truck and keeps the cabin usable.
That said, if you live in a region with heavy winters or muddy terrain, the Motor Trend FlexTough Black mats are indispensable. They are the first line of defense against the chaos of the road. For a complete setup, you actually need both. But if you must choose one to solve the most immediate discomfort of driving a truck in the summer sun, the weektic shade is the winner. It transforms a blistering ride into a tolerable one, and that peace of mind is worth the investment.
The Motor Trend FlexTough Black mats are described as "Universal Trim-To-Fit" and include dimensions for front mats (26.5x17.5 inches). They are designed to fit most cars, trucks, and SUVs, but they are specifically noted as a "Compact" size set for the front row only, so you should verify the cut-out requirements for your specific large truck footwells.
The weektic shade is designed for full-size pickups including the F-150, Silverado, Tundra, RAM 1500, and Sierra. The specifications mention compatibility with classic models like the RAM 1500 Classic and various generation numbers (1500/2500/3500), suggesting broad compatibility, but it relies on precise scan data for the specific body style.
Cleaning the weektic shade involves folding it and storing it in its included dustproof capsule case to keep it clean; it does not appear to be washable like the rubber floor mats. In contrast, the Motor Trend mats are explicitly waterproof and stain-resistant, allowing you to simply shake off dirt or rinse them with water for maintenance.
Yes, the Motor Trend FlexTough Black mats are a "Universal Trim-To-Fit" product. The description states they are designed to be easily cut for a custom fit that hugs your vehicle's front footwells, meaning you will need to perform the trimming process to ensure they stay securely in place.
