Incomplete: Assessments are limited primarily to one type of assessment (either formative or summative).
Aligned: Both formative and summative assessments are used throughout the course.
Exemplary: Multiple types of formative and summative assessments are used (research project, objective test, discussions, etc.).
Use different kinds of activities to assess student learning and do so before the exam/project at the end of the unit. By using a variety of assessments, you'll have a clearer indication of whether or not students are learning with enough time to adjust your instruction to meet their needs.
