Do you have any old pictures or know a little bit of the history about Mossy Head and the surrounding area? If so, we want to hear from you. Make sure you let us know of things that would be great to add to our website or social media please.
That's right! The Mossy Head Community Center is available for rent. Private parties, family reunions, commercial events, political rallies, birthday and sports events, club an organization meetings, or whatever you're gathering for.
There are two large rooms available. The main room offers the opportunity to hold a larger crowd with plenty of room for an event. The second room offers a kitchen area. It's great if you are having a family reunion or holiday event. Also great to serve as a concession area for your spectacular large room event. And don't forget the ball field, basketball court, and large outside grounds. We now have an outdoor seating area as well. This would be great for a wedding.
Surrounding the Community Center are several restaurants, service stations, two hotels, small stores, and of course the beautiful Northwest Florida.

Mossy Head Community Center Holds Founder’s Day Celebration
October 28, 2023
How does an over one hundred year old and still growing community remember the past? For Mossy Head, they gather together for the Community Center’s Founder’s Day celebration. Saturday, friends, neighbors, and families got together at the Historic Old Schoolhouse to remember and honor those who first organized the Mossy Head Community Center.
According to Corinne Porter, president of the Community Center Board, those recognized were: Ira Potter, D.W. Sweeney, S.E. Davis, Grady Johnson, W.W. Keene, P.N. Simmons, & J.N. Stewart. They certainly created a wonderful thing for our community. Those gathered also took time to thank Dottie and Rich Richardson. A bench with a plaque was presented and placed at the Old Schoolhouse Community Center in their honor.
Corinne Porter told those gathered, “I don’t know how many years Dottie & Rich Richardson worked with the Community Center. I became involved in 1991. Dottie & Rich were always active.” She said at first they had regular monthly meetings with many from the community involved. Eventually they stopped regular meetings & just the two of them worked together. She says, “Dottie & Rich took care of maintenance, Dottie kept the books, and I handled the rentals. Harriet & Ronnie Radford cleaned the building.”
Corinne said, “Dottie & I worked together for about 30 years & we never had a problem with each other. She has worked hard for the Mossy Head Community Center & has been a good friend for me as well.” The Richardsons were honored with a bench with a nameplate sitting on a platform outside the front of the building.
They now have a regular board that works towards improving the community center. Three years ago they received a grant to fix the roof and now have a new grant for central air conditioning and more historically accurate replacement windows. Porter said, “After not having a regular board for several years, they are working together as a team.”
Porter said, “Russ Bickford, who works with the AA groups, helps with many odd jobs; Gordon Porter, Dill Fautz, Carla Hunt's husband & son, all help with maintenance. Tammy Keene’s daughters Stephanie & Jessica as well as Carla can be found there working many days.
Those gathered thanked Harriet Radford for making & donating the cakes, Simply Good BBQ and 2A Diner for donating food, Mossy Head Florist, and Kim Jones for helping to set things up.
The Mossy Head Community Center Board also recently held a Fall Pioneer Day and plans to hold more public events throughout the year.
First Friday Food Truck Event
It was the first First Friday Food Truck event at the Mossy Head Community Center. Carla Hunt says it was a success!
She says the event gave folks a chance to gather and get to know each other in the community. Of course the trucks brought in a little variety to the already great eating places in Mossy Head. With places like 2A Café, Simply Good and Rad Dad's, McDonald's, Subway, and two produce stands, Mossy Head is becoming a potential destination for foodies.
The Mossy Head Community Center is located in the over 100 year old schoolhouse. After a safety inspection by Walton County, the building needed updates to provide a storm ready safe place. Some recommended just tearing down and starting new, but the community said, NO! At a meeting they voiced a loud, "We want to save the building."
Working with an engineer and local volunteers, the structural tie downs and improvements were made. Crews worked to freshen up the interior with a pleasant dual tone paint job. Restrooms and more were recently updated too!
The MHCC Board has added a full facility central heating and air and replaced windows to better match the historic old schoolhouse. Mossy Head is a growing community and the Community Center has been a community gathering place for many years. This provides a central point bringing the old and new together with a place locals can call their own.
