PhD Candidate, Sociology

University of Arizona

My name is Morgan Johnstonbaugh, and I am a PhD candidate in sociology at the University of Arizona. I use mixed methods research to study the dynamic relationships between gender, sexuality, technology, politics, and the body. My ongoing research can be broken into two primary projects.

My research on online political discourse explores how different types of gender inequality influence politicians' engagement in online discourse. I am interested in determining if and how social media provides female politicians with an unmediated space for advantageous engagement or mirrors limitations faced in traditional media.

My research on the electronic sharing of sexual images (sexting) explores what young adults' sexting practices may reveal about if and how beliefs about gender and sexuality are changing. I am using an electronic survey and in-depth interviews to identify the ways in which sexting practices are gendered and how distinctive practices may reflect, reproduce, or challenge existing beliefs about sexuality.
