Full Active Transit Signal Priority (TSP) lets streetcars and LRTs get green lights at intersections so vehicles carrying hundreds of people are not delayed by a few turning cars.
The currently opened Finch West LRT and the soon to be opened Eglinton Crosstown are only operating with Conditional Transit Signal Priority which only gives LRTs/streetcars priority when it's running late.
WE ARE ALREADY SEEING THE CONSEQUENCES DUE TO THE LACK OF FULL ACTIVE TSP.
Cost 3.7 billion dollars.
Metrolinx promised an end to end trip of 30 to 40 minutes.
We are seeing 50 to 60 minute end to end trips due to the lack of full active TSP.
Despite the fact the St Clair streetcar has it's own right of way, end to end trips can take 30 to 40 minutes. Driving a car along the line itself only takes 20 minutes.
Causes severe delays and bunching during rush hours, with streetcars coming every 20 minutes at times, despite streetcar being apart of the "10 minutes network".
Some riders actually preferred the replacement buses over the streetcars during 2024 repairs due to the issues.
The Spadina streetcar also has it's own right of way. Still, end to end trips can take 30 to 35 minutes. Driving a car along the line itself only takes 25 minutes.
Cost 13 billion dollars.
Metrolinx promised an end to end trip of 35 to 40 minutes.
We may get 50 to 60 minute end to end trips if we don't get full active TSP.
It is faster to take GO/UP from Mount Dennis to Bloor GO, and take Line 2 from Dundas West to Kennedy
HOW CAN WE STOP THIS? HOW CAN WE SPEED OUR TRANSIT UP?
The biggest thing we can do is push Toronto City Council to implement full active transit signal priority
Council will decide this week (Dec 14 - 20), whether to implement the full TSP on Line 5 and Line 6, as well as introducing plans to implement TSP at intersections on the surface transit network.
WE MUST EXPRESS TO OUR COUNCILLORS THAT WE WANT TRANSIT SIGNAL PRIORITY
1. Email your local city councillor and tell them you support full active TSP. USE YOUR VOTE AS A REASON FOR THE COUNCILLOR TO SUPPORT TSP.
2. Submit a comment on the motion 2025.MM35.15, saying you support it.
https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2025.MM35.15
3. Add your name to TTCriders "Give Transit the Green Light" petition:
4. Vote accordingly. Transit riders vote, and municipal elections are approaching next year.
5. Share this page with people who are stuck on slow streetcars and LRTs.
We already paid for fast transit. Transit signal priority lets it actually work.
