UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17th 2020

This year the annual event at the Famine Stone in Dublin will be shelved as a direct result of COVID_19. This then allows for 2 events that will be recorded / broadcast around the 17th of October that will include as it always does the voices of those who have been or are indeed at the sharp end of poverty. The theme for this years events is.

1. One million species are under threat.2. This is happening faster than expected.3. We are the asteroid that is destroying our planet.4. We will all suffer.5. This threatens our food, water and climate.6. We will see more pandemics.7. If we make wrong decisions we will all be in trouble.8. This is the moment of change.9. We are responsible for the biodiversity loss.10. There has been a global assessment over the last 2 years at the instruction of the UN and the following has been noticed:11. Small mammals have decreased by 60%12. Large mammals have decreased by 75% in the last 50 years.13. Extinction is a natural process.14. It's the rate of this extinction that is the problem.15. The rate of extinction is happening at a rate of 100 times the natural rate and its increasing.16. Extinction is not an imaginary tale.17. The world is collapsing.18. This is not just about losing the wonder of the species.19. It's about recognising that all of biodiversity is interlocked on a global scale. We somehow see ourselves as outside of it.20. A huge driver of this is the loss of insects. They form the food for so many and are the first pollinators of all our food. We need to be worried.21. Even soil is not as alive as it once was.22. Creation of space for cattle is the greatest single cause of biodiversity loss.23. Land use can be counted as follows: cattle 40%, Humans 36% & Wild Animals 4%!24. The overproduction of Soy is the cause of much habitat destruction. Transforming habitat land into agricultural use.25. Behind every single Pandemic we see causes in human behaviour.26. 31% of all emerging diseases can be traced back to land use change.27. Our consumption of beef and poultry drives this change in landuse.28. Exploitation of our environment is driving Pandemics but what wasn't realised was the speed of such change.29. Why haven't we acted sooner?30. At the 1992 Earth Summit an agreement was attuned to protect biodiversity. We just don't have Internationally enforceable legislation.31. What can we do? We have a moment to change how we run our world.32. We must reset how we run our economies! Investments that are good for the environment are good for all and will provide for a strong recovery .33. We must not waste. We must examine our consumption. We waste 40% of all food produced.34. Extractors must pay.35. If nature is given a chance, it can bounce back.WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS UP TO EVERYONE OF US.

About 886,000 people were experiencing deprivation, an increase of about 143,000 from 2018.
Households with one adult and one or more children have the highest deprivation rate of 45.4 per cent.
People not at work due to a permanent illness or disability have a deprivation rate of 43.3 per cent.
More than one in three people living in rented accommodation experience deprivation.

On Friday evening Sept 25th on the 5th anniversary of the SDGs Development Perspectives hosted (in partnership with Concern Active and Creativity and Change) an online event to celebrate the SDGs and the group who attended (including Brian O' Toole and Sr. Maureen O' Connell SW) co-created a 'Going Forth Manifesto' for the SDGs. This was done using a creative methodology led by Creativity and Change and it speaks to the optimism we need during these difficult times regarding progress on the SDGs. Please find it attached and please feel free to share it on your social media.

The UK Climate Assembly

The UK is committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050. Climate Assembly UK brings together 100+ people from all walks of life and of all shades of opinion to discuss how the UK should meet this target.

The assembly members met over six weekends in Spring 2020. They heard balanced evidence on the choices the UK faces, discussed them, and made recommendations about what the UK should do to become net zero by 2050. Their final report will be published on Thursday 10 September.

The work of Climate Assembly UK is designed to strengthen and support the UK’s parliamentary democracy by ensuring politicians and policy makers have the best possible evidence available to them about public preferences on reaching the net zero target. Parliament will use the report to support its work on scrutinising the Government’s climate change policy and progress on the target.

The report presents a detailed, coherent path to net zero by 2050 covering each topic that the assembly considered:

How we travel on land;
How we travel by air;
In the home;
What we eat and how we use the land;
What we buy;
Where our electricity comes from;
Greenhouse gas removals;
Covid-19, recovery and the path to net zero.

The report is the culmination of more than 6000 hours of Assembly sessions (just under 60 hours per member) across six weekends in 2020 - as well as a memorable address from Sir David Attenborough at the Assembly’s first gathering in Birmingham in January. A total of 47 speakers from academia, industry and policy faced challenging and insightful questions from assembly members, with live-streams, recordings and transcripts of their presentations available online. When the Assembly’s final weekend in Birmingham (due to take place 20th - 22nd March) was cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the assembly was taken online across a further three weekends, with Assembly members’ support, to ensure they could complete their work.

My Long Journey Home

I heard this interview with Jesse Thistle (in the middle of the night) and I found his story so inspiring. A story of hope, of triumph and of possibility. This young indigenous man struggled with his indigenous identity that manifested in ways that many young men have experienced before with drugs, loneliness, imprisonment and hopelessness before giving way to education, learning, connection, self-worth and then self-actualisation that now inspires. I can't believe that I have never heard of him before. Why not put it on in the background while you work or take it out with you while you walk.

This article on the SDGs appeared in the Cork Echo recently and Sr. Maureen O' Connell (South West Province) alerted us to it. Definitely worth a read as it creates a greater awareness of the SDGs.

Katriona Devereux: Badge of honour that aims to make the world a better place I RECENTLY got an impressive new piece of jewellery. It’s a circle brooch of 17 different colours and looks like an Irish language loving fáinne pin crossed with a LGBTQ supporting rainbow badge. It only cost €5.50 but it represents a blueprint for the future of humanity and the planet. Pretty impressive for a brooch, huh?
