Last school year, TPS identified 1,222 students experiencing homelessness. Families and students are couch surfing or living in motels, shelters, and cars because they have lost their permanent housing. Many of our students may also be experiencing homelessness and living on their own, or with a person who is not a parent or legal guardian. The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law designed to support students experiencing homelessness, by removing all barriers that may prohibit children and youth from enrolling and succeeding in school.
Every TPS school has a designated person who serves as the site homeless liaison for students who are experiencing homelessness. The school counselors are the homeless liaisons for Monroe. We also have a district homeless liaison, Kendall Huerta.
Please read the common signs of homelessness, services provided, and tips on how we can support students who are experiencing homelessness.
If you know of a student is living in a homeless situation, please reach out to Mr. Simonelli, Ms. Dixon, Ms. Cohea, or Kendall Huerta.
