On Thursday, October 24, Political Action Club members, under the advisement of teacher John Dickson, welcomed Senator Julian Cyr and candidates Joe Van Nes and Christopher Lauzon to the MRHS auditorium for a debate about the Cape and Islands district, with student-generated questions being asked and The Bite co-editor Hillevi Segerson moderating it. It was quite a lively event, with all grades having the choice to attend during their third block class to watch the three face off in a battle of politics, bringing important talking points and issues to the forefront. It was open to the public and press as well. Students were given the fantastic opportunity to be ENGAGED CITIZENS (had to sneak that one in for the district), with eighth graders getting an amazing experience seeing civics in action; freshmen, sophomores, and juniors had the chance to learn about their local communities; and seniors, many of which are entering the world and turning eighteen themselves, were given the chance to know where their voice is being heard and vote accordingly. Reminder: if you are not registered to vote, please do so. And when the day comes, actually go and do it. Make your voice heard, be part of the democratic process, and know that you, yes you, can make a difference in your community.
