I was out hiking at the Indiana Dunes State Park and decided to check the beach to see if any Monarch butterflies were migrating through. When there are high winds, I have seen many Monarch's that have had their wings damaged and are tossed unto the beach,

I had just seen a Monarch that perished and then came across this one. The Lake Michigan waves were coming right up to it as it lay helplessly on the sand.

In this Monarch I saw some very, very slight movement and I could tell it wasn't from the wind. The wave was coming to scoop it up and pull it out so I snapped this photo with one hand while I scooped underneath it to pick it up.

A quick video of the Monarch moments after she was lifted from the sand where the waves were overtaking it. She feels the wind flowing through her wings and it gives the sensation of flight.

She now can sway in the breeze away from the waves crashing down on her.
