Hello! My name is Mohsin Yusuf Ahmed. Welcome to my website.
I graduated with a Ph.D in July, 2019 from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia under Prof. Jack Stankovic. I will be joining as a research staff member at the Digital Health Lab at Samsung Research America in Mountain View, California. Excited to start a new phase of life, and at the same time sad to leave behind this town where I spent a long time, grew up, got educated and made life-long friends.
My research spans the areas of internet of things, applied machine learning, signal processing, mobile computing and cyber-physical systems. In particular, I have built acoustic sensing solutions that create smarter environments to improve the quality of our lives. These systems leverage dynamics of the physical world to infer the context of the environment, and adapts the underlying machine learning pipeline of the acoustic sensing system.
My Past Life:
I completed my B.Sc. from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Computer Science and Engineering in October 2009 and joined UVA for PhD in Fall 2012. I received an en-route Masters of Computer Science degree in May 2018.
I worked as a software engineering intern at Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon between July-December, 2015, and as a research intern at Samsung Research America in Mountain View, California between October 2018 and April 2019.
I am an alumni of St. Joseph High School and Notre Dame College in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I also attended Bangladesh Embassy School in Khamis Mushayit, KSA, and Maple Leaf School in Dhaka for kindergarten schooling.
My Other Life:
Besides being a grad student and a scientist, I enjoy time in cricket field. I presently bat with a Kookaburra Recall at Charlottesville Cricket Club, apart from my wicketkeeping duties. I played in few other clubs across America at Virginia Tigers (Northern Virginia/DC), Beaverton Lions (Oregon), Thunderbolt Lions (SF bay area), San Jose Everyoungs (SF bay area) and Union City Cavaliers (Northern California). Presently I'm using a pair of blue Phantom batting gloves, SG batting pads and wicketkeeping gloves, and CA compact helmet.
Over the past 2 decades, my batting has been influenced by, in chronological order: Herschelle Gibbs, Graeme Hick, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, and Mushfiqur Rahim. I batted with a V grip early in my career for a long time focusing on a straight blade, and only since 2014, overhauled to an O grip, resulting in strong bottom hand dominated horizontal shot development.
If you wanna chat about cricket, hit me up, or meet me at the pitch in an evening. I got so many stories to tell!
