Alexander McLachlan was born in Scotland 1818, emigrating to Canada in 1841. He had a farm in Amaranth Township that he lived on until retiring to Orangeville, where he remained until he died in 1896. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery. His poetry based on Canadian life and surrounding landscape lives on. He was often compared to fellow poet Robert Burns, his writing was full of familiarity and spoke to the people. He returned to Scotland in 1862 and in 1874 as a representative of Canada, giving presentations on immigration and Canadian life.
