Bonjour! Je m’appelle Genevieve Scott and I am excited to be teaching grade 4-8 Core French at Ashley Oaks this year.
The Core French program has changed a lot over the past few years. The focus now is giving students authentic experiences, to learn to speak French within a real-life situations. Rather than learning specific verb tenses or vocabulary, students are expected to learn how to communicate with each other. I have posted a document on my website that shows how students' language skills will continue to grow on what they've learned from grade 4 to grade 8.
Students will be assessed based on four strands: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (In term 1, Grade 4 students will only be evaluated on Speaking and Listening, as their skills are still developing.) Students will be expected to learn how to talk about themselves, their communities, their families, and their interests. They will also practice real-life skills, such as reading signs, making a purchase, and ordering food.
This year, students will be provided a duotang to organize their French work. This binder will remain in your child’s class for use each French lesson. Cahiers will be collected periodically to be reviewed, and are a great way for parents to keep up to date on their child’s progress. Your child may also benefit from having their own French-English dictionary. Students will only have homework if they are unable to complete an assignment during the class time provided.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school, or by email at g.scott@tvdsb.ca
Merci! À bientôt!
