Mleczko, who has four children -- ages 14, 12, 10 and 6, two boys and two girls -- loved getting opportunities with NBC at the Olympic games. She's worked the past four winter Olympics and broadcast field hockey at the 2016 Games in Rio. "But I'm not getting the reps in between," she said. "So even though I'm a veteran Olympic broadcaster, every time I go, I feel like I need to shake the rust off."

"He was in Pittsburgh for 10 years, working with the Pittsburgh Penguins," she said. "We both have two young girls, too, so it's nice when my parents come to visit from Winnipeg that we can all get together a little easier. Then again, Tom and Bambi Mleczko will tell you they never envisioned there being a first Olympics for A.J. Certainly not when she began playing hockey in the early 1980s, long before the idea of a girl with a stick was accepted.

There wasn't an Olympic women's team when A.J. initially laced up hockey skates at age 6 and insisted on playing on boys teams. And there was more than minor disapproval from outsiders who feared for the little girl's safet objected to her taking a roster spot from a boy.

Recalls Tom, "In one of her first games as a squirt, she had tears in her eyes after a tough play. But from that point she wanted to prove to everybody that she wasn't going to be a girl, but a hockey player. I never saw her cry again."

The 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team had a powerful impact on the growth of girls' and women's hockey in the United States thanks to the success it enjoyed at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. The team twice defeated arch-rival Canada, including by a 3-1 count in the gold-medal game, en route to winning the first gold medal presented in women's ice hockey at an Olympic Winter Games. Behind the guidance of Head Coach Ben Smith, Team USA finished the tournament undefeated (6-0-0) and outscored its opponents, 36-8. Cammi Granato, a 2008 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee, Karyn Bye, Katie Kingand Gretchen Ulion, co-led the U.S. with eight points each, while netminders Sarah Tueting and Sara DeCosta split time in goal, each winning three games.

This is the extraordinary story of Wadysawa Krystyna Rzepecka ne Harat, a second lieutenant in the Home Army under the pseudonym Wanda. In 1943, as a 17-year-old girl, she carried documents stolen by prisoners of the Auschwitz camp to Warsaw on a secret mission. They were later used by Jan Karski. e24fc04721
