A shift in thinking must occur. Cincinnati needs to focus on quality affordable housing for those with the lowest incomes.
My previous academic work is represented in this project because I have a background in psychology and design. I wanted to utilize these disciplines to examine the current issues related to quality affordable housing in the Cincinnati area.
Psychology is inclined to look at problems from the perspective of individuals and design is focused on finding solutions. I was able to apply both of these disciplines to learn more about how the design of housing can be guided by a vision that considers the important connection between housing and mental health.
Some of the most enjoyable work for me was collecting information, finding relevant connections, and communicating it in a clear way. I enjoy finding new source material related to my interests, and this project was an area of interest for me.
The challenge was learning enough from the various different disciplines involved to more fully understand the problem.
For instance, history became part of my research early on. I wanted to learn about the history of my city, Cincinnati, to better understand the context of the affordable housing problem. Economics also became an important consideration.
I hope that my project will help others to see what I have: That housing should ideally be regarded as a mental health, and human rights issue. It is a basic human need.
Quality and affordability are related to people's how it functions well as a home, and how well they can live their lives. Things that people need like education, jobs, and food depend on housing stability.
I see the possibility for the city of Cincinnati to lead the nation in quality affordable housing that benefits all residents.
Interdisciplinary education has played a big role in my learning. It has enabled me to see my design education as an important step in my education as a problem solver. Interdisciplinary studies has allowed me to think about big problems in a more holistic way.
I was able to see things related to affordable housing in new ways.
I enjoyed exploring the intersection between these disciplines to seek out new ways of thinking.
