What Is News?

Computer and newspaper on a desktop

We hear a lot of talk about “the media” these days. But what exactly is it? Where can we find it? How does it find us? And how much influence does it have over our lives? How much influence should it have over our lives?

Just like there are different species of animals, there are different species of media. In this lesson, we’re going to take a look at what they are and help you make decisions about which you want to invite into your home, which you’d rather keep at a distance and which you might want to avoid altogether. We’ll help you take a look at your own media consumption and make better decisions about it.

After this lesson students should be able to:

  • Identify their own media consumption habits

  • Compare different types of media

  • Demonstrate how to avoid spreading false news and information
