Miss Carr's Greek Scholars
Meet the Teacher
My name is Abby Carr. I am a first year teacher at St. Monica Catholic School, but have worked at the school for the past six years in the after school care program. I am excited to be a part of your child's education here at St. Monica and look forward to seeing how they learn and grow throughout the year.
In 1st grade we focus many of our studies around Theology, Classic Literature, and Greek History.
We learn many new things in Theology including the sacraments, creed, lives of the saints, prayer and worship, and moral development. We also read many Bible stories throughout the year to help us learn about God's love for us and the virtues. Our first graders also have the opportunity to participate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
Reading and English Language Arts
First grade focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, story elements, grammar, and speaking and listening. We also incorporate many of the great works of literature into our studies.
First grade will be studying ancient Greece and using what we learn about the lives of the Greeks to better understand our own lives, communities, government, and culture.
We will be studying a variety of topics including plant and animals, light and sound, and movements of the sun, moon, and stars.
The main components of math taught are addition and subtraction, time, measurement, and geometry. We will also focus on problem solving, articulating, and explaining our reasoning and problem solving methods.
