Miss Boen & Mrs. Silva's Classroom

Welcome to Our Classroom!

Dear Families

Welcome to Miss Boen and Mrs. Silva’s class! We are so excited for the year ahead! We are off to a great start, and we have enjoyed getting to know your 5th grader over the past few weeks. We have begun to build strong relationships, and we have set the foundation for a challenging and thought provoking school year together! We have high expectations for our students, and this class appears eager to accept the challenges and responsibilities placed in front of them. We are looking forward to working with you and your child!

Behavior Management

We will continue to use a whole school positive behavior system, but in the classroom we will use Classroom Economy. Each student holds a job in the classroom that they must complete to earn their weekly paycheck. Students can also earn money by going above and beyond, and they can get fined if they are not doing what is expected. Students can spend their money at the classroom store. This helps students practice balancing money and being responsible.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights. It should not take students more than one hour to complete the assignments. Most nights students will have math and spelling or Wordly Wise homework, in addition to nightly reading. We will alternate between Wordly Wise and Spelling every week. Students will be given a Reading Log at the beginning of every month, that they should fill out each night. I expect students to do their best job on their homework. If a student does not complete their homework, they will be given a Homework Slip. Parents will need to sign the slip that night, and the student will be expected to finish the missing assignment. The signed slip and completed assignment are due the following day.

School Supplies

If students run out of supplies, they will be able to buy it with their class economy money. One way you can help us have a great year is to donate tissues, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer to help prevent spreading germs. We are always in need of these important supplies!

Weekly Communication

Our weekly bulletin is called the Friday Shout Out Journals. This journal will go home every Friday, and it contains a list of some of the exciting things we did in school during the week. The students will write a letter describing their favorite parts of the week. They will pick 2 choices from the list and write a paragraph about each, describing the activity and what they enjoyed about it. The 3rd paragraph will be a topic of their choice. In writing these letters every week, we will improve a variety of skills, including grammar, capitalization, correct use of punctuation, and vocabulary knowledge. It will also help us review how to write a friendly letter. Families should sign the journal each week, and they have the option to write back to their 5th grader.

This year, we will be using the app called Remind. Remind provides a safe way for teachers to text message or email students and parents. I will be using this app to send important reminders about upcoming events, as well as share pictures. To join our class, send a text to the number 81010 with the message @missboenm and you will be subscribed.
