I wanted to be able to mount my phone to my car dash to use Google Maps, but my car doesn't have a convenient spot on the dash, and my vents are kind of a weird shape for the vent mountable phone holders. I had an idea that I didn't think would work, but I wanted to try it anyway.
Since my car has two circular vents as a potential mounting point for the phone holder, I decided to try this semicircular bracket that fits into the sides of the vents without touching the vent flaps. The rest of the design is simple with the phone holder being a fixed size.
The design works differently than I thought it would, with the torque created from the phone loaded where the top of the bracket touches the vents being the force that keeps the entire assembly from falling out of the vents. I thought the tolerance would be tighter and it would "hug" the space inbetween the vents, but this is not the case for the current design iteration. It's actually quite cool because while the phone stays secure, relieving that torque by lifting the assembly up makes it super easy to remove.
One day I'm planning on improving the tolerances on this design, but I'm happy with how it is working, and will keep using it until I make a better one.
