Sesuatu tentang cermin itu menarik perhatianmu. Selangkah, dua langkah — sesaat, kamu lupa dengan secangkir teh hangat yang menanti kamu dengan berbagai kudapan di meja. Sesaat, kamu lupa dengan makhluk — kelelawar kecil — itu, dan bahkan pada dirimu sendiri. Kamu bahkan tidak menyadari bahwa sang butler telah dengan sigap berdiri di dekat kursi satunya, dan jam telah berdentang.
Cermin itu tidak memantulkan bayangan siapa-siapa. Tidak bayanganmu, tidak sang kelelawar yang menjadi master dari ruangan ini, dan tentunya tidak milik butler hantu yang lucu-lucu menyeramkan itu.
Hanya kegelapan — kemudian, setelah kamu mendengar kelelawar tersebut mengetukkan kukunya di kepala kursi yang terlihat seakan bersepuh emas (mungkin itu adalah emas sungguhan?) sebuah cahaya seperti setitik lilin kemudian muncul di dalam cermin tersebut, dan wajah serta tubuhmu pun akhirnya tampak di pantulan cermin.
