작가 노트ㅣArtist Statement

지난 몇 년간 꾸준히 ‘기계’에 관한 작업을 진행해 왔다. 우리가 살아가고 있는 현대 사회는 인간의 노동력과 기계의 진보적 향상이 결합되었을 때 최고의 가치를 창출할 수 있는 환경으로 이루어져 있다. 기계가 진보할 때마다 많은 사회 구성원들은 불안을 토로하기도 하고, 생체적 자연으로의 회귀를 말하는 예술가와 이론가들도 산재해 있는 상황이다. 그러나 분명한 것은 우리 곁에 기계가 실존하고 있다는 사실이며, 우리 사회의 가장 밑바닥에 있는 사람들은 기계와의 공존 없이는 생존하기 어렵다는 것이다. 

나는 지금까지 이 기이한 공생 관계에 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 그 누구보다 열심히 노동하지만 실제로는 눈에 보이지 않는 사람들. 현대 문명 서비스의 혜택을 받는 사람에게는 기계와의 공생이 매끈하고 편리한 서비스로 느껴지겠지만, 노동자층에서 그것은 절박한 생존에 가까워지는 것이다. 그리고 그 시점에서 기계는 하나의 ‘주체’ 혹은 ‘개체’로서의 자격을 부여받게 된다. 나는 사회의 가장 낮은 곳에서 발견한 기계의 영혼에 대한 작업을 하고 있다.

Over the past few years, I have been continuously working on pieces related to machines. The modern society we live in is comprised of an environment that can create the best value when the progressive improvement of human labor and machinery is combined. 

Whenever machines advance, many members of society express their concerns, and at the same time, there are scattered artists and theorists who talk about returning to biological nature. However. what is clear is the fact that machines exist beside us, and those at the bottom of our society cannot survive without coexisting with machines. 

Until now, I have been focusing on this bizarre symbiotic relationship. There are people who work harder than anyone else but are actually invisible. For those who benefit from modern civilization services, symbiosis with machines probably feels like sleek and convenient services, but for the working class people, it is closer to desperate survival. Also, at that point, the machine will be qualified as a being or an entity. My work is about the souls of machines found in the lowest part of society.
