If you want a secure, noise-blocking seal for focused listening during your commute or to block out snoring in a dorm room, choose MINISO MS217; if you need situational awareness, sweat resistance, and an open design that lets you hear traffic and conversations while walking through the city, choose Monster Open Ear AC520.
• MINISO MS217: The standout strength is its ultra-lightweight, low-profile in-ear design with active noise cancellation (ANC) ideal for blocking distractions, but it trades off total environmental awareness and water resistance. Best for side sleepers, light sleepers, and commuters who need deep isolation.
• Monster Open Ear AC520: Its biggest advantage is the open-ear architecture that keeps you safe outdoors and offers IPX6 water resistance for workouts, though it lacks any noise cancellation or passive isolation. Best for runners, cyclists, and commuters who must stay alert to their surroundings.
The MINISO MS217 is engineered specifically for those who prioritize isolation and comfort above all else. With each earbud weighing just 3 grams and featuring an ultra-slim, low-profile shape, this device is designed to sit flush inside the ear canal without protruding. This makes it a genuine game-changer for side sleepers who have historically struggled with standard earbuds digging into their ears or causing soreness after a few hours of wear. The soft silicone material ensures that even when buried under a pillow, the device remains nearly weightless and pressure-free. If your primary use case involves falling asleep faster in noisy environments—whether that be a loud roommate snoring, street traffic outside your window, or the hum of an airplane cabin—the built-in Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) creates a private, quiet atmosphere that helps you disconnect from the chaos around you.
For the daily commuter, this model serves as a robust "gaming headset for commuting" alternative when you need to zone out completely. The Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity ensures a stable link with lower latency, meaning your audio stays synchronized without frustrating drops. While it includes features like 165-language translation via a dedicated app, its core value lies in its ability to function as a dedicated sleep and focus tool. You get up to 26 hours of total playtime, which covers multiple nights of sleep or several days of travel on a single charge cycle. However, if you are looking for a headphone that allows you to hear approaching vehicles, construction crews, or office chatter, this product is not the right fit. The physical in-ear design combined with ANC effectively seals the ear, making it impossible to maintain full situational awareness. It is a tool for retreat, not for connection with the outside world.

You should skip the MINISO MS217 if you plan to run in heavy rain or sweat heavily during intense workouts. While it handles general daily use well, it lacks an official water resistance rating like the IPX6 found on competitors designed for athletics. Furthermore, if you rely on hearing ambient sounds for safety while cycling or jogging in urban areas, the closed-back nature of these buds poses a risk. It is also worth noting that the translation feature requires a WiFi or cellular connection and does not work offline, so it is best viewed as a casual utility rather than a professional-grade communication tool. But for anyone seeking the "best wireless headphones for commuting" specifically to create a silent bubble where they can read, nap, or listen to podcasts without interruption, the MINISO MS217 delivers exactly what is promised.
The Monster Open Ear AC520 takes a completely different approach by abandoning the seal entirely. These open-ear earbuds utilize a unique handbag-inspired slide-open mechanism and a hook-style enclosure that rests comfortably on the outer ear rather than inside the canal. This design philosophy prioritizes "Surround Awareness," allowing you to enjoy music while remaining fully cognizant of your environment. For the urban commuter, this is often the safer choice. Whether you are walking across a busy intersection, navigating a crowded subway platform, or cycling down a bike lane, you can hear sirens, announcements, and people talking to you without having to remove your headphones. This feature transforms the experience from one of isolation to one of integration, making it a compelling option for those who refuse to sacrifice safety for sound quality.
In terms of durability and lifestyle versatility, the AC520 shines. With an IPX6 water resistance rating, these earbuds are built to withstand heavy sweat and direct water splashes, making them an excellent choice for gym sessions or rainy commutes. The plastic enclosure and sleek purple finish offer a distinct style, and the removable lanyard adds a layer of convenience for portability. The audio performance relies on Monster HiFi technology, delivering dynamic sound with deep bass and clear highs despite the open design. You get up to 8 hours of listening time on a single charge, extendable to 24 hours with the charging case. While the battery life is slightly less than the competitor, the 2-hour charge time is efficient enough for quick top-ups. If you are looking for the "best gaming headphones for commuting" where you might occasionally need to hear teammates or colleagues while still enjoying immersive audio, the open design facilitates this dual-focus capability.
However, this freedom comes with significant trade-offs. Because there is no physical seal and no active noise cancellation, the AC520 cannot block out external noise. In a loud train car or a bustling café, you will find yourself cranking the volume higher to compete with the background hum, which may not always be possible depending on your hearing sensitivity. Additionally, the lack of ANC means you cannot use these to block out snoring partners or construction noise for sleep. They are strictly daytime, activity-focused devices. If your goal is to meditate, nap, or focus deeply in a distracting environment, the open ear design will let too much noise leak in. But for the active user who values freedom of movement and environmental awareness over total silence, the Monster Open Ear AC520 is a purpose-built solution that balances style, safety, and solid audio performance.
• Best for noise isolation and sleep: MINISO MS217 wins decisively with its 3g ultra-lightweight design and Active Noise Cancellation that blocks snoring and traffic.
• Best for outdoor safety and awareness: Monster Open Ear AC520 is superior because its open-ear design lets you hear traffic, pedestrians, and announcements while listening to audio.
• Best for water resistance and sweat: The Monster AC520 holds the edge with an IPX6 rating, making it suitable for intense workouts and rainy weather, whereas the MINISO lacks this specific protection.
• Best for long-duration listening without recharging: MINISO MS217 offers 26 hours of total playtime compared to the Monster's 24 hours, giving it a slight edge for multi-day trips.
• Best for side sleeping comfort: MINISO MS217 is the only viable option here due to its flat, invisible profile that prevents ear pain when lying on your side.
• Best for style and fashion-forward accessories: Monster AC520 features a unique handbag design and slide-open mechanism that acts as a fashion statement, unlike the purely functional look of the MINISO.
• Best for calls in windy or noisy environments: While both use Bluetooth 6.0, the Monster's ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) for calls is paired with an open design that captures voice naturally, whereas MINISO focuses on in-ear call clarity.
• Best for budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum features: Both offer Bluetooth 6.0 and touch controls, but the MINISO adds 165-language translation support, adding value for travelers who don't mind the app dependency.
After weighing the specs and intended use cases, I would personally buy the MINISO MS217 if my primary goal is a reliable "gaming headset for commuting" or a tool to ensure a good night's sleep in a noisy apartment. The combination of 3g weight, active noise cancellation, and 26-hour battery life solves the most common pain points for travelers and light sleepers: discomfort and distraction. However, if your commute involves running, cycling, or walking in unpredictable urban environments where hearing your surroundings is non-negotiable, I would switch to the Monster Open Ear AC520. Its IPX6 rating and open-ear safety make it the more versatile choice for active lifestyles. Ultimately, for the average commuter who wants to escape the noise and relax, the MINISO MS217 is the stronger recommendation.
The Monster Open Ear AC520 features an IPX6 rating, meaning it can handle heavy sweat and rain splashes, while the MINISO MS217 does not list a specific water resistance rating and is better suited for indoor or dry conditions.
No, the MINISO MS217 requires a WiFi or cellular connection to access its 165-language translation feature via the "SayMi" app; it does not support offline translation.
No, the Monster Open Ear AC520 has an open-ear design with no active noise cancellation, so you will hear ambient noise clearly while listening to music, which is intentional for safety.
The MINISO MS217 offers a total of 26 hours of playtime with its charging case, providing slightly more endurance than the Monster AC520's 24-hour total capacity.
